ATEM Graphics Help .... (PLEASE HELP)

PostFri Dec 07, 2012 11:19 pm

I work at a high school where we just bought a Blackmagic ATEM 1 production switcher to replace our dieing Tricaster and are really liking the new switcher :D ! We just have one problem.... When we used our Tricaster we did our graphics (bugs, lower thirds, and etc.) through a piece of software called LiveTExt but to the best of my knowledge Blackmagic does not have a piece of software like that. So I am just going to use Power Point. I have set the Power Point up a PC which supports dual monitors and plugged the second output into the ATEM 1. I just can't get the ATEM to key out the black background and just overlay the lower thirds. Does some one have step by step instruction on how to do this? Thank you in advance!!!

You use the Luma Key option.

We use PowerPoint to do precisely the same thing using a green background and adjusting the Upstream Chroma key. Works perfectly. We also use a black background with the luma key for other overlays and that works very well also. The important part is knowing what source to enter for Fill and Key.

"Works perfectly" is a bit too optimistic about the chroma keyer.
BMD should invest some time to make it perfect.
I have had troubles enough to get the background perfect together with the key. How it works now, either the background or the key are ok, both together is a no-go and depends a lot on the background and color of clothes of the key subject. Dark colors on the keysource will fail with noise or the background will clip.
I know it all comes down to the lighting, but with a lighting setup that can make a good key on a panasonic 400 with minimum effort, the ATEM fails miserably at the moment.
This has been like this from the moment it came out until today, I have seen nothing change in any firmware update we ever had.

hptv,

I think you are looking for the mask settings on the key. If your source is power-point, you aren't going to have a per-pixel alpha values for your graphics, so as others have suggested. Use a LUMA key, set Black to be the "Cut/Key Source", and your Powerpoint source to be the fill.

Invert the Key to turn BLACK to 100% Alpha. Then apply a mask to clip around your lower super and allow the Program source through underneath.

Same technique will work on a DSK.

Cheers

John
