Two quetions:
1) Why would they not add this?

2) Why do they not make their limited spec conformity abundantly clear? Claims of conforming to SMPTE-425 are mis-leading given the lack of a clear warning - "We do NOT support 3G level A" - or something to that effect.

Dear Blackmagic!

I update my Smart VideoHub 40*40 to the latest firmware. I am very happy with the 3G SDI Level A support. Now work my matrix, decklink cards, but the most important device isn't work. Please, please update the ATEM mixer to 3G SDI Level A support. We wait for more than two years!!!

+1 Thanks guys for the update. My 40x40 is good. I now just need the same level A support for the 16x Multiviewer and then I can pass through my SDI A signal to the MV.

The good news is that the 3g-SDI chip BM uses in the 4k ATEM (probably a Semtech GS2972, or GS3490) can do both levels A & B, so it'd be a firmware only fix for them to implement this.

This sounds promising as does the info which was posted on this forum by someone at BMD who talked about how their devices used to be level A only and then they switched to level B.

Well don't think so.. 2 simple reasons..
1 - 3G sdi chips in a 4K atem which is 6G sdi?? Sorry but that doesn't match... ;)

2 - BMD uses mostly Macom chips instead of Semtech..

MACOM’s 12G-SDI enables Blackmagic Design to deliver 4K60P on a single link

Lowell, Mass., April 7, 2014 - M/A-COM Technology Solutions Inc. (“MACOM”), a leading supplier of semiconductor solutions for broadcast video infrastructure, today announced that Blackmagic Design, a leading manufacturer of broadcast and post production equipment, has selected MACOM 12G-SDI devices for their new 4K UHDTV conversion product.

12G-SDI is the next data rate in the evolution of the SDI standard. It is required in order to support 4K resolutions at 60 frames per second over a single coaxial cable, or optical fiber.

“Consumers appetite for 4K D-Cinema and UHDTV-1 content is growing at a tremendous rate. By using MACOM’s 12G-SDI products we are able to demonstrate 4K60P solutions carried over a single link to serve this new demand. The performance and robustness of the MACOM solution enabled us to be first-to-market with this exciting product, using the 12G-SDI interface,” said Grant Petty, CEO of Blackmagic Design.

“Blackmagic Design has a history of bringing innovative products to market and we are excited to be working with them,” said Hasnain Bajwa Senior Vice President and General Manager, High Performance Analog, at MACOM. “We continue to make research and development investments to enable the broadcast video industry to seamlessly transition to next generation standards.”

MACOM’s family of 12G products will be shown at the 2014 NAB Show on booth #N2819 in the North Hall of the Las Vegas convention center from April 7-10.

Who cares?
Can they fix it??
Undoubtedly.

Might it require a hardware change? Possibly but again this is speculation.

Is it helpful to blame the component manufacturer? Absolutely not! If the designers at Blackmagic choose to use hardware which is incapable of supporting industry standards correctly then that is their fault for choosing bad components.

The point is that rather than irrelevant standards such as 12g SDI we need support for current / next gen technology such as 3G SDI.

Can Blackmagic fix this? Absolutely.

Beyond that there is no need for "discussion" or apologists for poor functionality design.

Yes, this is great. Does the ATEM 3G Level A support only apply to the inputs, or is it possible to set the output format to Level A as well?

Page 44 of the new atem operations manual shows that you select our 3g output as either level A or Level B. I didn't see anything about it mentioning whether or not the inputs have changed.

Are you saying that it doesn't work with the 6.8 update that came out in April?

Now we need Level A support in the Mini Converters aswell.
For example a HDMI to SDI Mini Converter sends Level B with no option to choose Level A

This is sheer non-sense. I discovered this issue while struggling to ingest 1080p60 on a supposedly 4K card (studio 4K) .

Support for level A 1080p30 was introduced just 2 weeks ago with the latest update of Desktop Video 10.6.8.

come on, this is still HD-SDI not 3G yet !

I bought a 1080p60 capable SDI capture card which does not interconnect with the majority of existing hardware.

Damn crazy.

Happy to see the support in the Atem mixer.
I still need level A support in the Studio and Camera Converters to complete the chain!
Great progress!

+1 (because I understand its essential)

Could someone do a break down of what Level A and Level B are?

And dont send me to the wiki link...I have no clue what its saying...

As the subreddit calls it...Explain It Like I'm 5.

Also, how would I determine what my hardware is? My Sony Cams (VG-20/30) are HDMI out, not SDI. Does level A and level B apply to HDMI?

Thanks!

Level A is uncompressed video in one video stream up to 1080p60 at 3Gb/s. Level B Dual Link is basically dual link HD-SDI (which was another way to get 3Gb/s) using one physical interface.

I think just about everything I've ever touched has used 3G-SDI A. There's no such complication when it comes to HDMI, but if you convert that signal into SDI, you will end up with either A or B depending on the converter.
