NTSC (480i) Analog to SDI 720p

PostThu Dec 13, 2012 7:45 pm

Hi Folks - I'm sure that you've been hit with this many times, but I was not able to find a recent post.
I have 4 analog devices, video tape decks, that I need to convert to 720p for input into a Blackmagic ATEM1 switcher. I have purchased the BM Analog to SDI mini converters. I have also just purchased the BM UpDownCross mini converters. I anticipate the workflow to look like this:

DV Deck (480i) to BM A-SDI converter
BM A-SDI converter to BM UDC converter
BM UDC converter to ATEM1 Switcher

Do you foresee any challenges or can you offer any tips for success?

Thanks in advance for your patience.

I got it! Thanks to BMD engineer. He recommended a video scaler to bump from NTSC to 1080i.
Got a Geffen GTV-COMPSVID-2-HDMIS and plugged it into the BlackMagicDesign HDMI to SDI converter and everyone is playing nicely!!! Thanks guys. :)

Quick question, could you not have just gone straight from the Geffen's HDMI output to the AETM? I'm looking at purchasing one of these switchers and wanting to up convert video out of Canon XL2 video cameras to dump in to the AETM. Just was wondering if there was a reason you then took the signal from the Geffen and converted to SDI. Thanks!

Yes you can no problem.

I have 2 converters like that in my Flypack and it works fine.

BTW GeFen, Cyp, Atlona are all the same box. But Cyp seems to be the cheapest ones...

* I'm not affliated with anyone of them. Just giving your the hint as a user. ;)

Has anyone tried upconverting a Canon XL2? Just curious how the quality was. I would really like to buy the Canon XL H1's but you're looking at $2k-3k per camera vs. less than $1k per camera.

I use the TVone version the 1t vs 622

My observations is that you are much better converting NTSC to 720p and NOT go the 1080i route especially if you are going to stream it. the NTSC to 720p gives quality like an up converted DVD player. 720p looks better than the 1080i
