Hyperdeck Shuttle Glitches

PostWed Jan 09, 2013 1:06 am

My hyperdeck shuttles seem to be a little glitchy. First off I can only record at 30fps. If I send it 60fps I have terrible interlace issues. Secondly the output going to a intensity pro card is weird. Media express has to be set at 59.94 fps otherwise if it is set at 29.97 fps the video is split into two fields. Records at 30fps and spits out 60? What is going on?

Hello,

What most likely is going on is the mix up between 29.97 and 59.94 when referring to both frames and fields.

When setting Media Express, with Intensity at 1080i 59.94, the 59.94 is the field count. As there are two fields per frame, you divide the 59.94 by two, to get the frame count. This would be 29.97 actual frames but 59.94 fields. Same thing but counting it differently.

This is why it does not work when setting Media Express to 29.97 as this is 1080p 29.97 and not 1080i!

For the HyperDeck and interlacing issues, what is the video source you are sending to it? Are you capturing as compressed or uncompressed?

Makes sense for the Media Express answer. As for the interlace issue I am sending it SDI from a Panasonic HPX 170 straight to the Shuttle. I am going compressed DNxHD Quicktime.

Thanks for the details.

If the Panasonic is outputting 1080i and not 1080p and you are looking at footage captured on the Shuttle in QT Player on your computer, the interlacing will look more "jaggy" as this would be playing interlaced footage on a progressive only, computer monitor.

Now if you have access to the Intensity and take the HyperDeck's captured clip and play this out from Intensity out to a HDTV (which should handle progressive and interlaced footage), this should be a lot less interlaced than looking at the computer monitor.

I brought the footage into Adobe Premiere and it had to be deinterlaced in order to be watched. Any movement was jagged.

There are variables when working with interlaced footage that can cause the footage to look even more jagged. For example, a fast pan of the camera can cause heavier interlacing. Fast action will do the same.

If you can set your camera to output progressive, 720p 59.94/60 or 1080p 23.98/24 and then run the same test, this should look much cleaner.

Progressive works fine. It's just that I have to film in 1080i when using my ATEM 1 M/E.

Do 720p59.94 in that case. 720p is more desirable then 1080i in my opinion. Especially when working with the ATEM :)

When can we see an updated version of the ATEM with 3G SDI support? :D
