MEDIA EXPRESS crashing using Pro Res

PostMon Feb 08, 2016 1:18 am

I installed a MINI MONITOR with MEDIA EXPRESS to record off of an ATEM1ME but all that was available was UNCOMPRESSED formats. I had downloaded an update to get PRORES formats into the system and re-installed the Desktop video utility, everything appeared to work. However when I select a ProRes format (422) when I stop recording, Media Express crashes. None of the files will playback. Selecting uncompressed, no issues. I can continue to record uncompressed as it's solid as a rock, but uses disk space and I don't need that level of quality. Any ideas?

thank you
Brad

If you are using El Capitan then that's probably the main problem. Some people have had luck by using an earlier version of the BM software (10.3.7 or 10.4.3)

I confirm - downgrade Desktop Video to 10.3.7 fixes the problem on my MB pro retina with El Capitan.

Thank you, so I need to uninstall 10.5.4 and find an older version?

I just tried Desktop Utility 10.4.1 under El Capitan with no success. ProRes preset just crashes, and that is after having updated the ProRes codecs that Apple released this week. Downgrading the Desktop Utility is not an option for me since it would need a downgrade of the ATEM TVS firmware that I also use (this isnt working for me either since the El Capitan upgrade). I have a colleague that shares the TVS duties with me and he is not prepared to downgrade. I am at a crossroads here with BMD. 6 months or more since El Capitan came out and there are still no solutions from BMD. They have gone downhill in my estimation and I am unlikely to continue with their kit since i'm having to turn away work because of this. If they dont have any news on their stand at BVE in 2 weeks, I'll look for alternatives.

If you look at earlier posts we never said 10.4.1 we suggested 10.3.7 or 10.4.3

I have two MacBooks, and clean install 10.3.7 from BM support website on second mac. I suggest you uninstall first new version, it is safer solution.

Point taken Adam, but my point is that so far down the line from El Capitan's release, we shouldn't have to be working with older versions of software. Most other developers manage to keep up, why can't a major player like BMD manage it too?

Well Avid have only just released a version of Media Composer that is validated for El Capitan, and Win 10 (and Win 10 has been around a lot longer than El Capitan), so BM are only slightly behind so far, and they have just released a driver for the Ultrascope that is validated for El Capitan so hopefully the main drivers won't be to far behind.

Okay. I just downgraded to Desktop Utility 10.3.7 and all now seems to be working okay with ProRes preset under OSX El Capitan. I noticed when accessing the file that it was initially released on Feb. 16th 2015 - almost exactly a year ago to the day. So my previous moan about BMD lagging behind still stands. Is it really confidence inspiring when, as the host computer advances it's operating system, we have go backwards on the plugins just to stand still, let alone advance our art? I think BMD's kit is fantastic. It has allowed me to get into areas of business previously unaffordable or technically too complex. But they have earned a reputation for not refining details in the commonly used areas whilst charging ahead in other areas that people are perhaps not so concerned with. Case in point? - Did we ever get an answer to the audio drift problems with various H264 encoding options?
