I can’t get my GH4 in UHD 24p to be seen on the ATEM 2 M/E. Here’s the configuration and testing I’ve done.
LUMIX GH4 set to 3840 x 2160 24p (UHD, cinema mode, so not 23.98)
HDMI HD downconvert to set to OFF
[TEST 1 — PASS] : GH4 HDMI into Ninja Assassin; Ninja reports 4K UHD 24p (correct). This tells me the GH4 is outputting 4K UHD 24p as expected.
ATEM 2 M/E is set to 2160p24
[TEST 2 — PASS] MacBook Pro retina connected to BMD Mini Converter 4K, HDMI converted to SDI and into ATEM. Screen resolution set to 3840x2160 @ 24Hz. MacBook Pro is visible on ATEM. Passes, so I know the ATEM will see a 2160p24 signal.
Now to set up what I actually need.
[TEST 3 — FAIL] GH4 HDMI into BMD Mini Converter 4K, SDI into ATEM (tested with same Mini Converter that MBP just tested successfully with, so I know the converter and the SDI cables and the ATEM input are all functional; plus tested with additional Mini Converter to be sure), but fail. Black screen only on the ATEM.
I have also tried setting the Mini Converter 4K DIP switches to force UHD to no avail.
[TEST 4 — FAIL] So now I get another clever idea, and this gets really interesting. The setup I’m looking at now is the MacBook Pro displaying on the ATEM as it should at 4K UHD. I set the MBP to the program out over HDMI, which is being fed into the Ninja Assassin. The Ninja reports an input of 4K UHD 24p, as it should, and I see the Mac screen on the Ninja, as I should. So I decide to take the output from the Ninja, which is also 4K UHD 24p, and feed it back into another Mini Converter 4K and into the ATEM. This will create a loop, but this has to work, right… I mean, it’s the same friggin’ signal coming out of the ATEM just passing through the Ninja. But… fail! The Ninja actually reports “HDMI Monitor incompatible”. How is that even possible?
[TEST 5 — PASS] OK now to get silly, I put the HDMI program out of the ATEM directly into the Mini Converter 4K; same thing as before, but bypassing the Ninja. And this works! I see the same signal twice on the ATEM now.
So back on Test 4, for some reason the signal passing through the Ninja is getting altered in a way that either the ATEM or the Mini Converter doesn’t like. Which isn’t really relevant to my needs of getting the GH4 through here but at it’s interesting nonetheless. But since Test 5 passed, we know that all the hardware works fine.
Which brings us back to the beginning. Why the heck is TEST 3 failing… this is what I need to work and it makes no logical sense why it doesn’t.
[TEST 6 — PASS] Next I run the HDMI straight from the camera into the ATEM on the only HDMI port it has. And guess what… it works!! Now I know that the HDMI ports are a little less restrictive than the SDI ports (i.e. a camera at 23.98 coming in on HDMI will work on the 24p ATEM preset, but it won’t work if connected to SDI). So what does this tell me… that the GH4 isn’t exactly 24p, even though the Ninja reports that it is? Or is there some other setting on the GH4 that I'm missing? It's at the right resolution… right frame rate… HDMI is not down converting… it's at 100Mbit but that's the only option and I don't think that matters, does it? Or is that too much data for the Mini Converter to handle? Hmm that's an interesting thought…
