No Device Connected

PostThu Jul 07, 2016 4:33 pm

Hi guys,

My ATEM Production Studio 4K (bought new a couple of months ago) isn't connecting via the ethernet port.

The Mac Pro's ATEM Software Control cannot see the switcher by ethernet connection. The ATEM setup utility sees the switcher via USB connection and apparently an assigned IP address.

When I check Networking in Mac, I see the ethernet has a self-assigned address (169.254.58.35). This isn't the address that pops up in the Setup Utility when I connect the USB cable (starting with 192.*.*.*). I'm not a networking expert, but I'm also not a novice.

It seems something's up with the ethernet in the switcher. The switcher outputs video without any problems via SDI and HDMI. But it's pretty much a paperweight now.

This happened after we left the switcher on for several days at a time, for the first time. We usually turn it off after each production, since we produce only 1-2 days per month and since we've been having some cooling issues in the control room (83-84 degrees).

Already tried:
-Updating firmware
-Downgrading firmware (per BMD staff advice on Black Magic forum)
-Swapping network cables
-Swapping network ports on the Mac Pro
-Rebooting MacPro more than once
-Rebooting switcher (waited with switcher off for more than two weeks for the most recent reboot)
-Connecting to another Mac (same issue)

Everything worked marvelously, before this.

Make sure your wifi is turned off. Set the ethernet on your computer to a manual IP address of 192.168.10.100 and see what happens.

UPDATE: I fixed it!

Something had changed in the ethernet port subnet masks and IP address on the network settings for both the MacPro and producer iMac.

The subnet mask wasn't matching what the switcher was expecting.

How I fixed it:
I changed the IPv4 settings to configure manually and adjusted the subnet for Ehternet 1 and manually assigned the IP.

Evan, just seeing your reply. Looks like we were thinking along the same lines. Thanks.

Do I need to use Ethernet to connect my MAC to the ATEM studio Pro? Or can I use USB? My Mac does not have Ethernet.

I did connect via USB and was able to update and change the IP in setup but once I open the program it is not able to find the device.

We would suggest looking over the ATEM Television Studio manual for how to achieve control for the switchers.

I realize this is an old post, but I'm having a similar problem and have not found a solution, either through my own troubleshooting, elsewhere in this forum, nor in the manual. I do not see where in the manual it addresses whether or not you can use an ethernet adapter. I am using a Mac Book Pro, which does not have an ethernet port. I am using an ethernet-thunderbolt adapter to connect to the switcher. I am getting a "No Device Connected" error.
So, the question is: will the switcher not accept an adapted ethernet signal as a connection?

Thanks
Patrick

- What ethernet settings did you make in the Mac? Post them here!
- Did you connect to the atem with usb. Start up the Atem Setup tool and tell us what IP address does the Atem have?
- Do you do a straight cable thernet cable or do you have a switch in between. A switch is preffered.!

Thanks for the reply. I was able to connect via ethernet to another computer with an ethernet port. So I am guessing that my suspicion was correct: that the connection bt. the ATEM switcher and computer will only work with a direct ethernet connection, and not with the use of an ethernet adaptor. This is too bad because I would like to be able to use my Mac Book Pro with the switcher. If there is a work-around to enable the connection, I would love to hear it.

To answer your questions:
1. On the Mac, I entered the following settings:
IP address to 192.168.10.100
Subnet 255.255.255.0
Router: 192.168.10.1

(I used these same settings on the other computer and was able to connect)

2. Yes, I can connect the ATEm via USB to the Mac Book Pro.

3. There is no switch between the computer and the ATEM. I need to be able to connect directly.

Sometimes it is easier to work with a switch first to rule out cable issues. ;)

Turn off the wifi and start the BMD software.

One is in the 192.168.10.xx range and the other in the 192.168.1.xx range..
