ATEM TVS ignoring cameras

PostMon Feb 11, 2013 3:36 am

Hi all. I'm pluggin in a Canon HFG10 via a heavy gauge 25' HDMI cable, but the ATEM TV studio doesn't see it. The same input works fine with the camera plugged in directly from its mini-hdmi to hdmi cable. I'm guessing it is something related to signal strength, even with the high-quality cable. Can anyone shed any light on this? Would a signal amplifier help?

Thanks all.

When the camera works fine with a short cable, it might be a problem with the long one ;-)

Maybe a HDMI-extender would help. I bought one a fwe days before, but I havn't tested yet. Mayby in the evening....

Well HDMI is not very well suited for long runs..

Officially HDMI can not be longer than 10 meters.. But in practise it depends a lot on the acctual device behind it.

We see this same problem with the GoPro 2. The internal driver on such camera's are intended to have a short cable to your monitor to show images from the cam on your big screen at home. As build for home use it does not have a very strong output that can boost and carry the signal over lenghts of cable.

The best you can do is test a booster, HDMI to UTP (active version as they have buffers) or go for the HDMI > HD-SDI which will give you the possibility to run 100 meter BNC cable to your mixer.

That is what I suspected. Can a coupler (camera's cable coupled to longer HDMI cable) introduce more problems as well?

If your budget and cable allows, you can also do HDMI to SDI conversion and using Belden 1694A cable run up to 250 feet at 1080p/60 (which is more than the ATEM can take). You get the advantage of a locking interconnect and broadcast grade transport. I am personally not a huge fan of HDMI but do understand sometimes it is just cheaper and easier to run that way.

Thanks,

Benjamin

Thanks for all the advice. Since HDMI repeaters appear to be inexpensive and I already have the 25' cable, I'll try that first. We already have a BM HDMI-SDI converter for another camera, but I'm trying to use what we already have to work another camera in.

Wait with buying the repeater !

I tested the same cable configuration described in my last post with ATEMs HDMI-Inputs ->
It DON'T WORK !

My assumption is, that ATEM gives not not enough energy for operating the repeaters. My repeaters have a connector, I guess for power supply, but I don't know operating voltage and polarity...
