Problems using LED lights in a theater

PostThu Dec 08, 2016 10:29 pm

We are shooting live IMAG in a theater and are having issues when we use a rear cyc screen and LED lights.
The colors projected onto the cyc comes out completely different in our viewfinder. For instance, when we have a blue cyc screen, it appears as purple in our viewfinders. It doesn't happen on all LED colors, most notably Blue, but a few others as well.
Anyone have an solution?

It might just be what you are seeing in the monitor. In other words, the monitor may not be able to reproduce blues correctly. We typically see this in dance on our Panasonic cameras (hmc 150). When looking through the viewfinder, we see blue, when with our eyes we can see it is actually purple. When we bring it into editing, it is the correct color.

Have you checked the footage?

What colour temperature are your key lights (front lights)? If you're white balanced to tungsten (3200 degrees), LED light will not reproduce properly because their base colour temp is higher (5K-6K degrees). This may explain the BG colour problems you're having.

I confirm that I had the same problem with some led lights and have changed the white balance to 5K with optimal results.
