Connecting ATEM Tally to SmartView Duo Monitors

PostWed Feb 08, 2017 11:29 pm

We are currently using ATEM 1 M/E in our production along with 2 SmartView Duo monitors. Monitors are used to preview SDI signals from Panasonic robotic cameras, so all operators sitting together (we dont need tally light on the cameras, just on SmartView). What is the way for us to get tally signal out of ATEM and display the status on SmartView monitor?

My understanding is that I need to purchase GPI and Tally Interface from BD and then connect it to SmartView 9-pin sub D. Is there an cable adapter for sale to accomplish it?

Please advise on how to set it up.

It's very easy to make one, and probably cheapest option.
Even cheaper option would be using software JustMacros and network all your SmartView Duos.

Thanks for your response Pavel. Is JustMacros getting information from switcher it self, or Tally module still will be required?

Thanks for the plug Pavel

No additional hardware required - certainly not the BMD tally and GPI unit. You need a PC or Mac with Parellels I guess, but you get the additional advantage of being able to monitor ALL your sources both TX and Preview, and command your smartviewers/scopes accordingly.

And if I will go the hardware route, then I need to get buy 25 pin male solder connector, and couple of 9 pin male solder connectors and run some wires between?

Have a look at something like this.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00OT ... UTF8&psc=1

I connected short jumpers from this terminal block to some panel mount RJ45 connectors. Mounted faceplate to a double gang electrical work box (the terminal block and the interface fit inside)

Made my own cables with these

https://www.amazon.com/Calrad-Electroni ... +72-RJ45-T

*they are cheaper elsewhere*

In your instance, you'd want some 9pin deals on the receive side.

I'm throwing this out there as my soldering skills aren't great. And in an abusive to cables environment, it sure is easy to cut, strip and screw vs. getting out the iron.

So we are going to go hardware route, since JustMacros becomes expensive one you need multiple monitors, etc..

Tally box seems to have 9 outputs. I can connect each to show live (red) box around monitor. Any way I can show preview (green) box as well. Which pins from tally do I use for that?

Hello Vlad. The GPI/Tally box only provides contact closures for Program (Red). For informational purposes I will say that the Blackmagic Arduino Shield would let you connect both Program and Preview, but that does require some programming and hardware wiring. Just to pass that along.

Thanks Gary! While looking online, I see that people are using 2 separate outs 1 for Program, and 1 for Preview. This way Tally box will support only up to 4 cameras with both, if wired that way. Is that something you've heard before/have any input on?

If you want hardware tally which doesn't suck then get this...

Kasper also has a solution based on the SDI tally :)
http://skaarhoj.com/designs/sdi-tally/

Either of these is a million times better than the BMD official box.

Dont really need SDI. Kind of looking for simple way to connect ATEM to Tally and to two smartview duo monitors. Can that be achieved with standart BMD Tally box?

If you just want program (red) tally then yes the BMD box will work.

If you want program (red) and preview (green) then the BMD box will not work but the Skaarhoj SDI tally box will.

With the Skaarhoj GPIO tally box you can do some more fancy stuff - eg have red tally for camera on program and green tally showing that the camera is selected as active camera on the panasonic PTZ controller.

What about this thread, with your participation: viewtopic.php?f=4&t=1843 where users claiming following output layout for BMD Tally

GPO1: Ch1 "Program" tally
GPO2: Ch1 "Preview" tally
GPO3: Ch2 "Program" tally
GPO4: Ch2 "Preview" tally
GPO5: Ch3 "Program" tally
GPO6: Ch3 "Preview" tally
GPO7: Ch4 "Program" tally
GPO8: Ch4 "Preview" tally

Is that not true?

Gary, is there a way for you to share which GPO outputs are linked to which channels?

The outputs 1-8 are linked to ATEM inputs 1-8

note that the tally numbers are tied to physical inputs on the ATEM and cannot be remapped. If your cameras are running into a router upstream of the ATEM you are pretty much screwed.

Sorry late to post. Tom is correct. The BMD GPI/Tally box will not handle preview. 3rd party interfaces or the BMD Arduino Shield would do this.

Hi,
I'm going to wake up this thread to suggest an enhancement to ATEM software.
It would be great to use tally over network capabilities.
As we can control recorders with ATEM software, we could set one or more screens IP adress and ID (for SmartView Duo) per input and then, ATEM could send tally status to the targeted screen.
It would be great and so easier than going use 3rd part solutions or custom developement.
Thanks.
