Using CCTV Cams with the Blackmagic TVS

PostTue Mar 21, 2017 9:03 pm

I am currently using the original Television Studio series switcher at my church in which we have 1 Panasonic & Canon camera. I want to purchase a camera to mount above the pulpit facing the audience as we can't get any crowd shots. I was thinking of a cheaper option in which CCTV came to mind. Would a CCVT camera work with the TVS using SDI? I was curious to know if this would be a quick solution? Any help would be appreciated.

Sure. I've got 3 CCTV "box" cameras that I've used. The best one is a Samsung.

Thanks David. I was hoping that this would work. I would just need to run SDI cables from where I mount the camera to where the switcher is located right?

Do you think this one would suffice...or something like it? http://www.ebay.com/itm/LEXA-HD-SDI-2-1 ... SwOyJX4tua

Just remember you can't mix your 'P's' and your 'I's'.

Hi Baz, I am not quite sure I understand what you mean by not mixing my "P's" and "I's"

LOL! He means you can't mix 1080p with 1080i or 720p. All cameras have to be the same or if a single camera, either 720p or 1080i.

According to the posted description, no, it will not work as it is only 1080p. You'll need one that allows you to set it to either 720p or 1080i.

Okay, I will need to make sure I have the cameras have the right settings prior to ordering them. Thanks

Pick up a used Canon Hfs20 (or 200, 21, 30) and a $30 HDMI-SDI converter. It'll look better than the CCTV camera and it's 1080i on the output. Should be about the same money too.

And most CCTV cams on SDI are 1080P which the original TVS won't work.. Maybe some can be set back to 720P.. But not sure what resolution you run at the church..

Hi Evan. We actually have one of these cameras in use. I want to add more camera as we only have 2 viewpoints and I want to be able to add more variety to our recordings. I also want to mount the camera stationary.
