What does everybody use for Internet in a stream?

PostFri Mar 31, 2017 8:46 pm

I'm hoping to stream a sporting event in a week. Just found out that they don't have a wired Internet connection there, and that "the WiFi is spotty at best."

What do you all recommend to solve the Internet problem? Tether off someone's phone? Anyone have favorite services they use to wirelessly stream?

In order of preference...
Satellite uplink
Bonded 4g modems

Generally it's a good idea to contract out the internet provision to a specialist supplier who can concentrate on providing the connection whilst you deal with the vision side of the show.

Sattelite internet goes steady up to 6Mbit..

I don't gamble a lot on 4G with big events.. I do a lot of festivals and other big events.. And the first thing that is gone is 4G internet.. (While here in the Netherlands we seem to have a top 10 notation of best mobile networks in the world... :? )

But when it's getting crowded anywere south of 6000+ people a CellTower will get overloaded and switch back to 3G / 2G and cut off or slow down internet to a minimum..

We also do security cameras for festivals and my OBV doubles as a Security Central Post of Operations.. We really on Fiber and Sat internet as a backup.. Running Voip because cell networks will go down first thing if something bad happens..

You could also try to find a building nearby area with a stong internet connection.. And get someone to deliver you a Point 2 Point Wireless connection.. With the right gear you could easily get 100/100 over 2km P2P link..

We use a fiber connection through level3/vivx in Atlanta for major stuff.

But if you are web streaming, you might use fiber to ethernet converter boxes, then run fiber to wherever there is good strong Ethernet and jack back in. We've done this on a college campus using campus fiber infrastructure to go quite a long way to connect Ethernet. We've considered doing this to remote the ATEM control panel in order to switch from another building. We've done it with a call-in show ip-phone system. Although we have Ethernet available most places we go on campus, there are times when connecting to your own subnet or private network in another building without campus firewalls and security measures getting in the way. So we've come up with these as a solution.

We used this unit, and were happy with it: http://datainterfaces.com/OFC-1000PSE.a ... gQodRZEI_Q

Along with this base unit are these sfp's: http://datainterfaces.com/SFP-7020-WA.aspx
http://datainterfaces.com/SFP-7020-WB.aspx

You have to specify the SFP for your specific needs. Those SFPs are made for gigabit Ethernet over 20km of fiber. You have to buy matched pairs so the signal matches up with the transmit and receive properly, on the right frequencies. You need to make sure you are getting the correct singlemode or multi mode - as dictated by the fiber you are using. We used singlemode, 1310 tx/1550 rx nM and 1550 tx/1310 rx nM SFPs.

Works great. You could buy a huge, 3000 foot spool (or more) of dual single mode fiber and run it a long way to where you have Ethernet if needed.

I have used Ubiquiti Network gear to get to where the router is. Then its a hardwired connection. If budgets can afford go for the 24Ghz air fibre. So you should not get any Wifi Interference.
