I think the main difference is that the DVI extender allows injecting of audio.
MicroConverter will only take audio that is on the HDMI which you can't get with most DVI to HDMI cables.
The other difference may be in how flexible the resolution and Framerate detection/setting works.
The DVI extender doesn't support 1080p50/60 but has lots of PC standard resolutions whereas the Miniconverter (don't have one on me at the moment) will probably just have the standard broadcast ones, including 1080p50/60.
