ATEM 1 M/E input improvements

PostSun Mar 10, 2013 7:09 pm

I currently have an ATEM TVS and I have to say there is very little reason for me to upgrade to a 1 M/E... Input wise, I don't think the current 1 M/E is a good step-up from the TVS. Why ?
I think more advanced user find out that HDMI is not a good connection to use. It can be used for short connections, like from a PC, or to/from a recorder, but not for other stuff. The ATEM 1 M/E has way too many HDMI connectors and not enough SDI inputs.
Finally the order is wrong: the first inputs should be SDI e.g. for cameras, the last ones HDMI, for other devices.

So my suggestion to BMD for the ATEM 1 M/E:
Have 8 SDI inputs and 2 HDMI inputs, where input 7 and 8 can be selected between SDI and HDMI.

HDMI inputs are great for video playout and graphics from a computer. Limiting it to 2 inputs wouldn't be ideal, at least not for us.

And I'm not sure what you mean about the SDI inputs should start first. What difference does that make?

I agree, HDMI is not intended to use for long cable runs for cameras. I use all my HDMI inputs for computer feeds, external media players and such. Also, just use a SDi to HDMI if you have more SDI sources you need to use.

what does it matter which order they are in? you can change any input to be any number on the switcher.

Ah, thanks to you I discover the button mapping feature, I never noticed.

I am running all SDI inputs through a router which gives me a lot of flexibility. I would rather have all SDI for that reason. I don't want to get in trouble if for example the graphics generator is in another room.

So you guys actually use more than 2 HDMI inputs for non-camera sources ?

I sometimes use 3, and if we ever get the GoPro working, it'll be 4. Our two main cameras use HD-SDI.

I have 4 mini convertors SDi to HDMI built into my system making the ATEM have 8 SDi inputs. These convertors are also re-routing the audio for me from the 4 connected camera's to my audio mixer which is than connected back to the ATEM (passing two delay boxes of Behringer) These convertors now give me the possibility of using the 8 inputs anyway i like and i am not limited by the maximum length of HDMI cables. I got the best of both worlds this way.

The Behringer Ultracurve is popular.

I use 2 Behringer Shark FBQ100 feedbackeliminator since these are mono. They are really not expensive and work great. I use about 60mSec delay.
