Decklink Duo 2 and Marshall Cameras at 59.94 or 60fps solved

PostMon May 22, 2017 8:15 pm

I was having issues getting my Marshall 108060 and 1080p59.94 cameras reading and writing on a Hackintosh using a BMD DeckLink Duo 2.

The 2 models I was using, the CV150-CSB and the CV150-M, weren't recognized at their respective highest framerates, and I was only able to get 1080p30fps or 720pf60fps for read and write, despite my m.2 SSD showing enough muscle to handle it.

Both BMD support and the folks at Marshall were extremely helpful with my issue, and the fix ended up being an upgrade from the CV and CM 100 series cameras to the CV-502 MB camera, and now I have the proper (specified) frame rates!

I am still not sure why, but I thought it would help people having the same issues or looking into purchasing equipment that works well together. B&H Photo Video chat recommended these cameras to work with the card, and both company's specs state they work at 59.94fps. The only possible issue I understood enough to remember was the SMPTE 425M A+B, some signature or handshake isn't right between the devices.

tl;dr The DeckLink Duo 2 and the Marshall CV-502 MB cameras run at 1080 @ 59.94fps on an i7 4.01GHz Hackintosh (iMac 14,2) running Sierra 10.12.4, with 64GB RAM and a standard m.2 (Crucial MX-300, not even my NVMe).

edit : heard back from BMD and this is their response

"I checked the specs on both camera models, and found that Marshall lists SMPTE standards for the CV502-MB but not for the CV150-CSB. If you check on our specs page for the DeckLink Duo 2, you'll see that we list all SMPTE standards we abide by, two of which are listed on the specs for the CV502-MB. Perhaps the camera you had issues with doesn't abide by the same standards."

So the CV series are SDI security standard.. And are not SMPTE complaint.. (SMPTE Fee applies..)
For broadcast you alsways want SMPTE proven compatible product..

There is a lot of SDI gear out there that has a SDI connection.. But no SMTPE complaint as it is designed for HD security market..

The Marshall CV Cameras are SMPTE 424M for 3GSDI and SMPTE 292M for all other HD formats. You may just need the version that outputs 59.94/29.97fps (-MB, -CSB, -10XB, etc). Let me know if you have any questions.
