Live 50i to 50p conversion

PostWed Jul 19, 2017 9:02 am

Hello,

Can anyone advise if the Teranex Mini (Sdi to HDMI) can do smooth 50i to 50p up-conversion?
I have one 50i broadcast camera head that needs to mixed in with 50p cameras (running into an Atem HD TV vision mixer).
I have tried one other product, a Decimator MD-DUCC cross converter but the results aren't too great.

If anyone can share their experiences doing live 50i to 50p conversion that would be great thanks!

The MD-DUCC 1080i50 to 1080p50 produced a smeary picture, I didn't expect a lot as it is a small box and does a lot of other things that are useful. I was hoping the Teranex series can do a higher quality job.

Another weird thing with the MD-DUCC I encoutered is when converting from (1080)50p to (1080)50i, the results look like 25p, i.e. half the temporal information!

I think it also does this when converting (1080)50i to PAL analogue 50i. I don't know why it deinterlaces like this but it's not correct.

The Teranex Mini converters don't really have much in the way of frame rate conversion options.

The Teranex Mini SDI to HDMI is capable of down-converting a UHD (2160p) signal to HD (1080p) when connected to an HDMI display (or input source) that only accepts HD signals. But it keeps the output frame rate the same as the input (so 2160p50 becomes 1080p50).

Similarly the Teranex Mini HDMI to SDI is capable of up-converting an HD (720p or 1080p) signal to UHD (2160p), but again the output frame rate is the same as the input frame rate. There is also an option to convert 60 fps input signals to 59.94 fps (to convert certain computer video output signals to NTSC broadcast compatible frame rates). But that's about it.

If you need more extensive frame rate conversion options, you'd probably need to look at the Teranex Express, although this obviously comes at a higher price point (and larger form factor).

Take a look at the TVOne units. I had a requirement a couple of years ago for 1080P to 576i and evaluated the BM Cross, Decimator Cross and TVOne VS626. The TVOne blew the others away on visual quality. HDMI in/out was a drawback but its price point allowed the extra conversion to SDI. I don't know if the current units include SDI I/O but they are well worth an evaluation if you can get a demo unit (my dealer sent me one to test).
