Video Assist 4K: playback issue with different resolutions

PostTue Aug 22, 2017 2:38 pm

Hi,
I did 5 recordings with my brand new Video Assist 4K (FW 2.5, SDI In, one card, no error), each of them ProRes HQ:
1 clip 1080p50, 1 clip 1080i50 and 3 clips 720p50 in this order.
My Video Assist 4K in playback mode only offers the last ones for playback: 3x 720p50.
If I add another 1080p50 clip, it only offers the last one, NOT the two 1080p50 ones...
Same issue with my Video Assist (FW 2.5).
I can play and edit each of the 6 clips, if I feed the card to a computer.
I need to be able to play all clips on a card with the Video Assist (4K).
Any ideas please?
Regards
Dieter

As with the BM cameras, the VA only plays back the clips that match the last recorded resolution.
Tip, if you unplug your camera from the VA, then it should playback all the clips recorded st that resolution, starting with the last one first. Pressing the back arrow twice should get you to the previous clip.

Hi Denny,
thank you for your reply.
You're right: If I unplug the source, both 1080p clips are being offered.
This playback behaviour seems to be a feature.
Sorry, but I consider it to be a bug. A recorder -- video recorder or camera -- should be able to play what it has recorded to it's media.
Cheers

Yes, but the Video Assist is a camera recorder, not a dedicated playback device. In the Pro video workflow, you record the camera video in camera orbto an external recorder, then hand over the media to a data wrangler to check playback on a computer. So adding the feature to be able to check files in the field is a nice feature, you just need to disconnect the VA from the camera, so it releases the locked in signal resolution.

I used to record on my Pocket camera, now a Micro Cinema camera, remove the media and play it back in a free standing VA. Also, by changing input on the VA from HDMI to SDI, the the input signal from HDMI is disconnected (same as unplugging, but quicker) and then the VA would play back the entire series of clips, this worked very well.
