MacBook freezes when HDMI is connected to UltraStudio Mini

After an update from Mac OS El Capitan to Sierra (10.12.6), my MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015) freezes whenever I plug in an HDMI cable that is connected to an Ultrastudio Mini Recorder. Connecting the MacBook to other outputs via HDMI works.
The Ultrastudio Mini Recorder is in turn connected to a Mac Pro where we run the latest version of Wirecast Studio.
Any ideas? I have been streaming just fine until the Sierra update and have excluded problems with other hardware.
