2160P60 HDR

PostTue Sep 05, 2017 2:41 pm

Looking to switch multiple HDMI 2.0a devices on an HDMI 2.0a display.
This is 2160P60 HDR content....

Will the Teranex HDMI to 12G & 12G to HDMI pass the HDR data?
Can I put this 12G HDR into the ATEM 2ME 4K Broadcast switcher?

Unfortunately, I don't think there is currently any standard way to transmit HDR metadata over SDI. There is some information about this in Sections 6.1.6 and 6.1.7 (pages 23-24) of this document: https://www.ultrahdforum.org/wp-content ... r-2016.pdf

And some more info in the Encoding and Transmission section (in particular page 44) of this presentation:
https://www.smpte.org/sites/default/fil ... es/HDR.pdf

Which means that for HDR formats like HDR10 or Dolby Vision, you would likely need to apply the metadata at the display end (HDMI output). While the Teranex Mini SDI to HDMI does have the ability to apply a 33 point LUT to the output, I don't believe it currently has an HDMI 2.0a output support and is not capable of injecting HDR metadata. So you would need another device to do this.

HDFury makes a couple of devices (the Integral and Linker) that have HDMI inputs and outputs and are capable of injecting HDR metadata. Among Blackmagic products, I believe only the DeckLink 4K Extreme 12G and UltraStudio 4K Extreme have HDMI 2.0a compatible outputs capable of 2160p60 video with HDR metadata.

For HDR video in HLG (Hybrid Log Gamma) format, there is no HDR metadata, so in principle it should be a little more conducive to transmission over SDI. But since HLG is a little newer standard, it requires an HDMI 2.0b capable output at the display end (as well as an HLG capable TV or monitor for viewing). The inclusion of HLG in HDMI 2.0b was only standardized as of December 2016, so support for it is not as widespread as HDMI 2.0a. I don't believe any of the Blackmagic products support HDMI 2.0b yet, but the AJA Hi5-4K Quad-3G to HDMI converter does.

HLG seems to be the direction things are heading for HDR live broadcasts since it is compatible with both SDR and HDR displays and doesn't require HDR metadata (which can easily be lost across multi-step broadcast workflows). But it's still pretty early days for live HDR production.
