School - ATEM Studio Help with recording

PostFri Dec 22, 2017 10:21 am

Hi everyone,

Our school has purchased a black magic atem studio pro hd

Does anyone have any experience with capturing from this?

I'm guessing a Blackmagic Ultrastudio Mini Recorder would do the job but I'm not sure on the setup.
Or if this would be the best solution. We have a very decent external HDD, can we save directly to that, or does it need to go on the mac first?

Currently the atem unit is plugged in to our IMac retina.

Sorry for the noob questions. Got a lot to learn  :D

Any help or pointers would really be appreciated.

Thanks.

For best system reliability i would recommend to use stand alone recorder. Blackmagic Design have a few options such as HyperDeck and Video Assist series...
Also look around for more affordable solutions (that use hard drive as recording media) such as Atomos line of recorders.

Indeed best way is an external recorder. But if you also want to do streaming your best bet is towards a computer.

The Ultrastudio is a nice device but only capable up to 1080i50/60 1080P25/30
So if you want to run 1080P50/60 you have a problem and need to go for the Ultra Studio mini HD. ;)

Thanks for the reply guys.

Does the Desk output at a specified output (regardless of the inputs), or will it just match up what the feed it?

The cameras we have are: Panasonic AG-HMC80P AVCCAM HD
The various modes are listed as:
Video Recording (AVCHD mode)
Recording Format: AVCHD
Compression: MPEG-4 AVC / H.264
Recording Video Format: HA, HG and HE modes - 1080/60i only; PH mode - 1080/60i, 1080/30p (over 60i), 1080/24p (native), 720/60p, 720/30p (over 60p) and 720/24p (native)

Video Recording (DV mode)
Recording Format: DV
File Format: AVI Type 2
Recording Video Format: 480/60i, 480/30p (over 60i), 480/24p (over 60i)

I think the ideal setup for us would be to have an external capture device that saves straight to out big external HDD.

Does that seem sensible?

Thanks again.

Most of recorders need put media inside .. For example Hyperdeck MINI use SDcards .. Hyperdeck Studio use SSD disks .. etc .. External HDD have USB connection .. I dont know any recorder capable to record to USB HDD .. maybe any H264 recorder ..

Well it is not very common to record straight to a USB drive..
You might want to look into Hyperdeck series recorders for proffesional and editable size video.

To record straight to USB drive is not common but does excist.

I wouldn't really trust a USB disk while capturing live - they are often the cheapest, non-reliable disks in my experience. I wouldn't neither trust SD-cards - definitely not as my only recording, and probably not in any mission critical role, after all we've heard about the new Hyperdecks.

I record to trusted SSDs on a Hyperdeck Studio 2, and then have a SATA -> USB3-adapter to transfer from these SSDs to storage later. Of course, SSDs are cheap now, so if you don't record all that often, you can just archive them. With ProRes422-codecs, storage space isn't really an issue.

EDIT: Just remembered though, that we once got a recording of a show directly onto a USB-disk from a recording server in the Norwegian Broadcasters HD1 OB-van. But of course, this wasn't mission critical, this was just a way to quickly deliver to us, who were making a behind the scenes with a small group.

Roman, what Hyperdeck and SSD model are you using? I've been using the Hyperdeck Studio 2 (not the pro-version, and not the tiny one) with Kingston SSDNow V300-series disks - never had a problem. I always record in a somewhat compressed quality though.

What I do know is that the Hyperdeck can stop recording on dropped frames - so if the disk is too slow or the input glitches, there might be trouble.

Thanks for the replies, guys. The help is genuinely appreciated.

I have managed to find an AV Specialist local to us who is available to book for a days training which I think would be very useful.

He will be able to pop in in advance and check out our setup and then advise on the bits we need get.

I will certainly keep this thread up to date as I think it could be helpful to other people new to this.

The hyperdecks look very good and I will definitely run those by the Specialist.

We are using Hyperdeck 12G and Samsung 850 EVO .. We have this SSDs about 50 pieces ..
Eveything works in 99% .. But sometimes we got an Hyperdeck FREEZE .. Red recording light around SSD is stopped to moving (still light red) and no buttons working .. ONLY put out power cable .. As I said , we everytime recording onto two Hyperdecks simultaneously , so its not problem ..
