Finally a professional solution! Only 2 questions.

Pretty pumped after today’s release. This has been a long time coming for BM. I just hope the market responds well for you guys and if people haven’t already given up.

Only 2 questions come to mind...
On the camera, is low light sensitivity improved at all over UMP? It wasn’t terrible before, but when compared to equivalent Canon options, low light lost the battle on UMP’s 35mm.

Next question is have you built in controls from the b4 pin connection to respond to the ppt intercom button on the lens or remote control , or for the RET button in the same areas when using the fiber converter. I could see the RET being likely supported already from previous camera firmware’s (I would hope) but since the intercom is completely self contained in the rear unit, the camera would have to tell the fiber pack to enable the mic for intercom.

Can’t wait to actually test this stuff out at NAB. Really hoping for a 2-3 M/E control panel refresh with better pricing.

As I pointed out in another thread:
I think the UM Broadcast uses the same chip as the Micro Studio Cam:

BMD Micro studio camera 4k sensor size:
13,056 mm x 7,344 mm

UM Broadcast Sensor Size:
13,056 mm x 7,344 mm

I think you can expect a slightly worse light sensitivity on the Ursa Mini Broadcast because the B4 converter loses also some light beside the not very sensitive sensor.

That means that this camera is not usable in normal light situations. You will always need controlled studio lighting to make it work. If that is really the same sensor then the low light capabilities are close to zero. But we have to wait and see how the camera performs.

Cheers

A camera is more than it sensor. Cooling, and the Video processor are going to determine light sensitivity.
Most sensors in small cameras are more light sensitive, and have greater DR, than how they are implemented in a given camera.

The Pocket camera sensor is a good example, this Aptina sensor can do higher frame rates, faster readout times, than how it is implemented in the Pocket camers, where it was tuned for DR, frame rate capped at 1080p30, and sensor readout time slowed down to keep,it from overheating in its small form factor Camera body. The same sensor in a Micro Cinema Camera with better cooling and a faster video processor, resulted in faster sensor readout times and increased frame rates up to 60p.

While the 4K sensor may be the same as in the Studio and Micro Studio Cameras, it’s video oricessor is going to be bigger, and more capable of adding additional processing to allow for faster sensor readout times, and increase the useable Lux sensitivity of the sensor, and wil, have better cooling to keep the video noise down, allowing for higher gain values to be used. Also the sensor could have different analog converters on the sensor, also increasing the useable gain, and setting a new base/Native ISO at something closer to 400 or 800.

So just because the sensors are the same size, doesn’t not necessarily mean they are the exact same sensor, but may be from the same sensor family, Aptina, but implemented differently.
