Ultrastudio thunderbolt recorder SDI and HDMI simultaneously

PostFri Apr 12, 2013 10:03 am

I have a 15" Retina Macbook Pro with two thunderbolt ports
I have two Ultrastudio mini recorders
and I have an Sony EX1 camera putting out SDI and a DSLR putting out HDMI.

The problem is this: how to capture SDI and HDMI simultaneously? It seems to be impossible because the Blackmagic Design setting in system prefs allows me to set capture to either HDMI or SDI, but not two mini recorders, one on each thunderbolt port with one set for HDMI and the other set for SDI. So for live streaming with multiple cameras this is a bit of problem.. :(

To be clear: I can make either SDI or HDMI work at 1080i resolution, so I'm not seeing the problem that lots of users have found with HDMI (I just can't bring SDI and HDMI in simultaneously)

Does anyone have a solution please?

I've also that the mini recorder only works 1080i. 1080p will not work for me so far. Is that a design limitation or have I just not figured out how to bring in 1080p properly?

thanks very much for your help :D

From what you wrote I am assuming SDI on one mini recorder and HDMI on the other? You cannot do HDMI and SDI on the same mini recorder, but I don't think that's what you are asking.

In system preferences, if it recognises both devices, it should be a drop down menu where you can choose between the two. If it is not there go to system info and check to see if both devices are recognised. (If not swap over the ports/cables they are connected to see if there are any issues there). You would need to adjust 1 for HDMI and 1 for SDI, the problem is knowing which one is which, so prehaps connect them and configure them 1 at a time

Also in media express you would be able to switch between the 2 devices

Please note, you may have capture issues if you are trying to capture 2 streams to the one hard drive, you may need to do 1 to the internal drive and 1 to an external drive via USB

In terms of 1080, the formats supported are:

HD Format Support
720p50, 720p59.94, 720p60, 1080PsF23.98, 1080p23.98, 1080PsF24, 1080p24, 1080PsF25, 1080p25, 1080PsF29.97, 1080p29.97, 1080PsF30, 1080p30, 1080i50, 1080i59.94 and 1080i60.

So if you are trying to do 1080 in 50, 59.97 or 60 it will not be progressive

Hope this helps
Daniel
