Hi,
We've been considering buying Teranex Mini IP Video 12G in order to convert video to IP and route it over our existing ethernet network.
But, the "Connectiong to your network switch" section of the manual for an HD stream says that "If you are connecting to a network switch with VLAN functionality, ensure VLAN is disabled."(p6)
The thing is, our entire network is setup with VLAN so disabling this functionnality is just not an option for us sadly
Does disabling VLAN is an hard requirements or a simple recommendation please ?
If it's a recommendation, what are the consequence of not disabling VLAN on the network switch ?

If not, we'll seriously evaluate the option of setting up a direct cable between the two building but if anyone is aware of any alternative products comparable to this one but usable in an network with VLAN, i would be grateful of any suggestions

Vlans limit the passtrough of data on a connection. For instance if you have 2 switches in 2 buildings. Connected by a 1GB fiber module. And you have running 2 vlans on it.. The module will (depending on the switch) alocate a certain amount of data speed to each VLAN. So if you have 2 vlans and it cuts up the 1gb to 2x 500mbit or even less for 1 vlan.

Also i guess they will use some QoS settings to prioritise the video data.. But with Vlans it will still cut up your line speed.

not necessarily...depends on your switch programming. you can auto alocate or manually define bandwidth.

as example...one setup of ours uses 2x 1G trunks between switch ends. Dante traffic (vlan 9) gets routed to trunk 2 with a full gigabit of bandwidth. All other traffic (vlans 2-8) uses trunk 1 which auto alocates bandwidth as needed.

quite honestly, if you are running any kind of IP video I'd hope you were using a 10G trunk (or 2!) between switches where bandwidth isn't so much of an issue...

Keep in mind that the Tico codec is a 4:1 compression ratio.
So 1080P50 = 3G-sdi (3 Gbit/s) will end up in the 1/4 of the speed. 750 Mbit/s. Which would take up 75% bandwidth capacity of your 1Gb SFP if you running 1Gb network hardware.

That's exactly our setup with the added limitation that there's more than 2 vlans on the uplink trunk

So basically, the instructions to disable the vlan functionnality is a recommendation and is motivated by the fact that a switch with a 1Gbps trunk uplink won't have enough bandwith
And i guess that having a 10G trunk uplink would solve that problem without disabling VLAN support

I guess we'll have to seriously consider upgrading the network physical links between our buildings

I would recommend ubiquiti's edgeswitch 16XG, they are pretty inexpensive and work pretty good
