Genlock Micro Studio 4K

PostThu Apr 12, 2018 11:24 am

Hi

First time posting and looking for a bit of help.

I'm currently building a Stereo 3D rig using two Studio Cinema 4K cameras.

I've got these connected to two 4K video assists and am trying to genlock with the Blackmagic Sync Generator.

With everything connected I get the REF message displayed on the screen but when checking footage afterwards neither of the videos seems to have the timecode applied.

Am I missing anything obvious?

Thanks

First, Genlock is an analog sync pulse signal, not a time code input. So the cameras being “Gen,Ickes” use their own Click to generate internal TC to the recordings. Gen,Ickes is more for keeping video equipment sync’d in a switching situation. You need to input actual TC to the csmeras from a master TC clock, if yiu want post production TC consistent display between the three camera’s footage.

The Micros do not have a TC input as such, but you can use time code LTC signal recorded to one of the audio tracks.

Thanks for the reply Denny.

That makes a lot of sense, I'm a bit new to this sort of thing but I have access to a Zoom F8 which can generate the timecode I think. I'll do a bit of digging and see if this can help.

You should use Genlock in addition to recording the LTC timecode on the audio track. For 3d it is very important that the start of every frame on both cameras is at the exact same time position. Otherwise you will get a lot of problems in post.
