SD OB Vans - still in service. How much rare is it?

PostMon Apr 16, 2018 10:39 pm

Public TV broadcaster in my country (Czech Rep.) still uses SD OB Vans for the live events like football or hockey matches (top national level). Is it normal also in another countries (except the "3rd world")?

2008? No, 2018! ("HD" in a left corner of the picture means HD channel, not HD transmission)

Well it is not normal anymore for todays standards.. 1080i should be the standard.. But if they still can sell it they do a pretty good job..

I mean LDK 8000 is arround for about 12 years now.. They support 1080i HD. So they should have switched to HD at least 5 years ago.. ;)

Of course, TV viewers are not statisfated with this "old-style" picture.

But I'm a retro-lover :D

In North America, the Sports Video Group (SVG) does an annual survey of a bunch of the major companies that rent out OB trucks:
https://www.sportsvideo.org/2017/02/21/ ... le-online/

As of 2017, 3.6% of the trucks in operation were SD only, although I have a feeling the remaining SD trucks probably don't get much use and are soon to be decommissioned. In the 2011 survey, 20% of the trucks were still SD.

If you're curious, there's a lot of other interesting info in the survey as well such as the brand of cameras, switchers, etc. that are in use in the trucks. This is mostly targeting the higher end of the market, so it may not include all of the smaller trucks and vans out there, but is still an interesting snapshot.

Yeah sometimes oldies have a long breath before they are going down..

Another way to look at it.. This OB might have been in service for more then 20 years.. Most gear today wont last 10 years...

This OB van was built in OCT 2007, after this transsmison had got six used LDK 8000 cameras from another CzechTV's OB VAN (from 2011), which gets new LDX 86 cameras.

This guy got the better deal, the 8000 Elites are still amazing cameras, last of the CCDs.

The Ursa Broadcast outperforms a LDK8000 in lowlight. :) But yes the 8000's are still a workhorse..
