ATEM - 720p input from Windows 10?

PostTue Jun 19, 2018 9:02 pm

I need to connect a couple of Windows 10 pc's to an ATEM Production Studio 4K.

As the ATEM Production Studio 4K has no scaler, the pc's must use the same resolution as all other equipment, 720p50 in my case.

However, I ran into the issue that even I set the Windows resolution for the DisplayPort output (which I convert to HDMI) to 720p50, it actually outputs a 1080/50 signal, but shows the image (on a TV/monitor) as 1280x720 resolution. So the output is like an upscaled signal.

I verify this in two ways: With a TV which shows the signal type when pressing the info button, and by a SDI/HDMI tester which shows the signal type in its display. Both show 1080/50.

The issue is the same with several pc's, all running Windows 10 version 1803 (the newest at the time of writing): Lenovo X230 and T430, and HP Zbook. Same problem with Intel HD Graphics and Nvidia.

I have tried installing the Intel or Nvidia driver from the vendors webpage and setting the resolution directly in their software. Same problem.

Then I took a Lenovo T430 with Windows 7 which haven't seen Internet for years. It outputs 720p50 as soon as I set this resolution in Windows.

Anyone found how to force anything else than 1080 in Windows 10?

Hello Peter. On Windows 10 check to verify these steps:

Right Click. Display Settings -> Advanced Display Settings.
For the extended display output click Display Adapter Properties for Display 2
In the small window click the "List All Modes" button.
You can select "1280 by 720, 50 Hz".
Click OK and Apply. You should see the output you want I believe. The List All Modes will show you everything available to your display adapter.

Hello Gary, thank you for replying.

The "List All Modes" is one of the settings I have tried. It changes the desktop resolution but not the output signal, it is upscaled to 1080.

Today I noticed that both are listed under "Advanced Display Settings". The "Active signal resolution" stays at 1920x1080 while the "Desktop resolution" changes to 1280x720.

If you google "New Windows 10 Change Resolution Practices" a guy had the same problem, and gives the same advice as you, but it does not work on my machines with Intel HD Graphics 4000 and Windows 10 1803.

Hi again - I found a solution for the HD Graphics 4000:

First like you said:
Right Click. Display Settings -> Advanced Display Settings.
For the extended display output click Display Adapter Properties for Display 2

Then click the tab "Intel HD Graphics Control Panel", Graphics Properties..., Display
Under Scaling, turn on "Maintain Display Scaling".

Back at "Advanced display setting" in Windows, both "Desktop resolution" and "Active signal resolution" now shows 1280x720, as do my connected equipment.
