Hyperdeck Studio Mini H264

PostFri Jul 06, 2018 5:02 pm

I'm really sad. I just bought two units of Hyperdeck Studio Mini for the new H264 recording format only to find out it only support progressive. Watch the Grant's NAB video again, he did not mention this. Was at Singapore Broadcast Asia last week and funny thing was, the guy I spoke to did not know of the H264 update. Same goes to our local reseller.
Water under bridge now, my question is, will there be an firmware update for it to support interlace format? I honestly hope Blackmagic Design people can give me an answer.
Regards,
Ed

Interlaced is not supported (yet) And nobody knows if it will ever be implemented and when..

But the best way is to collect all those people that are running a interlaced setup and NEED to record interlaced.. The more voices, more change it will be pushed up the list... ;)

So explain why do you guys need H264 Interlaced more over a Codec like Proress or DNxHD with there bulky file formats?? I'm curious what people want to use it for. As it is lower quality then the heavy codecs..

Myself i think it would be very handy to have a H264 file that can be played directly on a SmartTV and send easily by WeTransfer without going over the 2GB limit.
To have some file that i can hand out almost directly to the customer after copying it to a small USB stick.. ;)
Very handy for longer videos like church ceromonies or sementaries to hand out to the customer. But also for long haul recordings like Visual Radio productions that are streamed to internet but you want some backup recording of the event. Which does not need to be high editing quality.

Vote +1
1080i is stil used a lot. I had to record 4 days of festival last weekend for a TV broadcaster. The BM Duplicator was used instead. As it has interlaced support.

Then i even wonder more why the Interlaced mode is not supported by the hyperdeck mini's.. While they have the software for that under control and already working in a different device..

Only problem that i can think off is processor capacity.. But hey if Progressive works.. Why not interlaced..... ;) It is still parsing a frame from the buffer to a codec wrapper.. And if that frame contains half the image or the full image should not matter that much you would think.....

We use interlaced at a university. We have lots of lectures to that we record and I would love to send people the video immediately after the lecture instead of having to transcode

Sadly, there are still people using cameras that only suppor 1080I output... That people wont be able to record in H264 and will need to record in highly demanding space formats, when they dont need to have a high quality recording.

Very good possible to use the Hyperdeck as a playback device.. But all hyperdecks are very very picky on the codec and layout used!!

You have to render the fileformat in exact the same codec specs as the recorded files. Otherwise it wont work.. It is not VLC media player with over 200 codec support to playback everything.. ;)

i live/work in one of the largest countries in the world, where the predominant broadcast format is 1080i. if that's not a market you can serve, what is?

Well, yes and no, population wise, the US is only the third largest county in the world, China being number one, followed by India.

As for 1080i being the US Broadcast standard, only two of the three major networks are 1080i, the third is 720p, and as UHD broadcasting replaces SD and HD, everything will go progressive, as UHS is progressive only. Most digital cable systems are 720p or 1080p. So I would say 1080i is not the majority Broadcast standard in the US, nor is the US a majority Broadcast market world wide, employing NTSC standards.

Here in the Netherlands, All TV stations run 1080i.. ;) 1080i is still the most used broadcast standard today..

So i still think 1080i should be included on the hyperdeck mini.. Or it will be a discussion that never ends...

+1 for interlaced. 90% of our work is 1080i50. the h.264 recording function is useless as long as it does not support interlaced. considering a switch to datavideo h.264 recorders at this point. they have some interesting stuff coming up at IBC.

cheers, daniel

Again BMD shots itself in the foot , like with many other BMD products ( Decklink quatro being typical ).
The Hyperdeck Mini is insufficiently developed and supported. But this is unacceptable : not to record in interlaced for h264 but it records interlaced in Pro Res or DNxHD at 145 Mbps. Crazy, insn't it ?

Hi,

Thanks for the H264 support but definitely need interlaced H264 recording as all our devices can't handle progressive format, we switched all devices to interlaced.

please new firmware update !

+1 for interlaced (50i) H.264 recording.
In the UK broadcast world, 50i is still king.
