Mini hyperdeck h.264 playback

PostTue Aug 07, 2018 9:03 pm

I have a set of hyperdeck mins I use for ISO recording but sometimes as video decks using Prores 422. Recently we upgraded our field unit to a PC. I am trying to export videos from Premiere CC as H.264 for playback but can not get them to play.

Exporting as H.264 1080p (1.0) vbr 1 pass target 10mbps max 12mbps

The hyperdecks are updated and I am using 300MB/s cards they can record h.264 and play back what they record not what i have loaded on to the cards

Fastest way is to record a clip on the deck with your desired settings, import, check the exact settings, and match exactly when exporting your own clip. The decks are very picky.

Also, pay attention to the audio encoding/bit rate.

There is a note on page 23 of the HyperDeck manual which says:
Currently, HyperDeck Studio Mini will play back H.264 files recorded on a HyperDeck Studio Mini, but not H.264 files recorded on other video equipment.

So it's not a huge shock that this doesn't work. With H.264 files there is a wide range of possible codec variations, and probably not all of these codec options are supported by H.264 decoding support on the HyperDeck Mini. With ProRes this is less of an issue as the codec is much more tightly constrained to a few possible encoding options.

Presumably if you exactly match the codec settings (including resolution, frame rate, bitrate, profile level, entropy encoding, B-frame usage, audio codec, etc.) of a file recorded on the HyperDeck Mini, you'd have a chance of playing it out. Maybe.

Given all of this I have a feeling that ProRes may be a better option for external files you intend to use for playout on the HyperDeck Mini.

Exporting from a PC though so Proress is out the window (see what i did there?)

Also trying DNx files but only the sound is playing with no video.

I believe it should be possible to use DNxHD. There was an earlier thread about this that suggested using After Effects for the encoding:
