Buy SDI cable drums (Sommer Cable?)

PostSat Sep 29, 2018 10:37 am

Hi

I'm going to buy SDI cable drums and need advice.

Is it someone that have experience of and have tried out the Sommer cable HDTV like this one?
https://www.thomann.de/gb/sommer_cable_vector_bnc_hdtv_dh_500m.htm

Or the one that's 100 meters, does it manage 1080p25p that long?
https://www.thomann.de/gb/sommer_cable_vector_bnc_hdtv_dh_100m_2.htm

Earlier I have used the "Canare L-3CFW" cable. I like the quality and the flexibility of this cable but the Sommer cable is half the price.

Will I be disappointed with the Sommercable? How is the Sommer cable compared to the Canare L-3CFW? (I know that Canare cable is for 3G-SDI and UHD but how does they compare apart from that? The feeling of the cable.

I also like the connectors of the Canare cables. For the Sommer cable I have looked at the Neutrik connectors as spare parts to repair the cable. (https://www.thomann.de/gb/neutrik_nbnc75blp9.htm).
What' s your experience of this connectors?

Or do you know other cables from Sommer cable that I should be looking at?

Grateful for your inputs on this subject!

The cables you referenced use the Sommer Cable SC-Vector cable, more detailed specs for that cable can be found here:
https://shop.sommercable.com/en/Cables/ ... -0161.html

This cable is similar to Canare L-4CFB, it will be a bit thicker and less flexible than Canare L-3CFW. The L-CFW series are more flexible in part because they use double braided shields rather than the foil inner shied/braided outer shield combination used by the Canare L-CFB and SC-Vector cables. These flexible cables also tend to be a bit more expensive than other cables of the same gauge.

Looking at the cable specs, in terms of transmission performance, the SC-Vector cable should be a bit better than Canare L-3CFW in part because it uses a slightly larger diameter conductor. Actual transmission distance can vary depending on the SDI sending and receiving hardware at each end, the cable used, and the connectors used, so it's hard to say anything definitively about cable distance. But if you are able to do 100m runs with the Canare L-3CFW you are currently using, I'd expect you to be able to do the same with the SC-Vector cable.

In terms of connectors, I like the Neutrik Rear Twist connectors personally. Since you can turn the plastic cable boot to lock and unlock the connector it makes them a bit easier to plug and unplug from SDI ports that are recessed or spaced closer together.

Thank you for your very detailed response!

The flexibility is what I worry most about. What is your opinion, is it too non-flexible or is it good? I guess I should buy a 10 meter cable on test and see what I think.

That was a good feature with the connectors that I did not know! Seems very smart. Is it best to buy neutriks own crimping tool?

We use the SC Vector cable on 110m runs all the time. Connected to an Atem Production Stuio 4k usung 1.5G it works great. On the older Atem 1ME we could use them even on 130m runs since they had more tolerating SDI inputs. 100m are definetly no problem with proper mounted BNC connectors.
We also use (and highly recommend!) the Neutrik reartwist connectors. I actually find it pretty hard to turn „normal“ BNC connectors by now. Would like to have them on every cable. But yes, you will definetly need the Neutrik crimping tool in order to get solid and clean mounts.
Concerning stiffness: don‘t buy the FRNC version of the SC Vector for mobile use, as they are too stiff. Sommercable is quite popular in Germany.

We use the Vector 600 series for our cabling. Even capable of doing 12G-sdi video..

Check this topic from the FAQ for more info on cabling.

Big thanks for your replies!

I think I will go with the Neutrik connectors with the rear twist. Because of that I have started looking at cables without connectors.

Can anyone tell the differens between theese 3 cables? Is it just the color? What’s the ”sw” and ”sc sc” means in two of the cables name? I find it hard to know what’s the cables specifications are on the website of thomann. Have emailed thomann for more specifikations too.

Anyone have experience of these cables? I think my biggest concern is if they are not flexible enough?
