3D printed B4 lens caps and some other prints

PostMon Oct 29, 2018 11:54 am

We where looking for B4 lens caps, but they are pretty hard to find, so decided to 3D print them. After couple of iteration I am pretty happy to them, they do the job fine.

These are printed with cheap ( ca. 400 euro) Flashforge Finder 3D printer at standard resolution, takes about 2.5 hours to print. Support materials are easy to clean. These have been also finished with sand paper to make the top and bottom surfaces look nicer, but works fine also without that.

We made them of PLA, so above 50 degrees Celsius they may deform, but you could print them of ABS etc.

We will not sell these, but if you like to print them you can get the .stl file here and also the .gx and .fpp files for printing with Flashforge Finder. You can also open them with FlashPrint.

Nice Kim, good job. For anyone wanting one of these caps, but not able to print one from Kim’s file, can get a similar 3D printed B4 lens rear cap on EBay.

3D printing sure is handy, here is B4 lens installation for next weeks testing, really solid.

Thanks Denny.

This is how it looks installed, without the additional support it would not work well on this installation.

Would be interesting to hear if someone has printed the lens caps, how did they work for you?

New version of B4 cap (B4CapV6) and B3 Cap added in here https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/ ... fzxrlldNJB

The B4CapV6 is easier to put on the lens at the first time.

About printing the caps. We print them the outside down, this makes it inside very clean and nice looking and not much support material is needed.

It leaves the outside though a bit rough, at least with the inexpensive 3D printer we are using. It is easy to make it a bit nicer looking using P80 roughness sandpaper.

The B3 Cap support material is really easy to remove, on the B4 cap a tool like this is useful for removing the support material.

If there is interest we could make these caps available at Shapeways, to order them directly ready to be used.

Had good results with printing the lens caps from Levitizer, Did improve the cap a bit with Kim to fit better.

3D files will be available soon when Kim also had a succesfull print to test if the measures and tolerances are the same on his machine. As we print it as a 2 part piece. That press fit together. :P :)
