A radical new way to control an ATEM!

PostMon Nov 12, 2018 9:28 am

By 'radical' I mean it is being controlled by a method developed in the mid '80's and still being used today!
This Serial Controller can actually be used with any Production Switcher that boasts 'GVG100 interface'.

No need for Ethernet control if you are having network issues. This can also be used as a backup switcher control and used at the same time as a normal control panel to control another Mix Effects row.

This can only be used with an ATEM model that has the RS422 connector.

Nice. Is this something you plan on selling?
A rackmount version would be cool to have for redundancy if the main switcher was to fail due to network problems.

Rack mount version would be possible but would need a total retooling of the hardware.
And as usual, if there is a big enough demand I would do it.

The GVG100 protocol implementation on ATEM is very limited and very buggy especially on the large models.

Yes the limitation is placed on the GVG100 protocol but what bugs do you speak of?

For example crosspoint feedback on inputs > 8 and internal sources will return wrong inputs and many more.
I canceled all my developments for this because of all the bugs they have on this interface.

And this is not a problem of the basic protocol limitations.

Even not possible to use it for Macro shotbox applications as the forgott to map the EMEM to Macros...

Yes there are a few unusual things with the ATEM implementation of the GVG100 protocol control but everything I have come across was a limitation of the basic protocol itself.

For example, there is a setting you can make to tell the ATEM to send 'gvg100' status data automatically when something has changed on the ATEM, but it only does it for ME 1 even though the 'EX' byte can provide Mix Effects number information (as used in the GVG300 implementation).
There is also a lot of extra stuff that the ATEM could have implemented but it seems they limited it to what an edit controller would need.
My Serial Controller has built in workarounds for most requirements plus the ability to add features as and when (and if) they get implemented by the ATEM (eg. DSK2 control, Keyer 1/2 'cut' source etc).

Please remember my initial design for the Serial Controller for ATEM was to provide a backup in case of network problems/failures.
But it seems the majority of my sales have been for people to use it as a small 10 input hardware control panel for UNDER $300. Many have also opted for the larger unit.

Baz
