RS232/422 Camera Control

PostThu May 09, 2019 6:04 pm

Looking to control an URSA over the air. My wireless transmitters/receivers have tally and RS232/422 but not SDI output. They also don't carry the SDI channels 15/16 or whatever Blackmagic is using for the ATEM channels.

Is there a way to extract ATEM control communication from the switcher, or SDI. Stick it on RS232/422 and then on the other side, take that serial communication and stick it back on SDI and into the camera?

We have a wireless CCU + Tally unit in development for the ursa with a range of 200Meters. ;)

Will be released around the time the Teradek Bolt 4K hits the market. It will be made so that the control unit ie bolted between the Vlock plate and the Transmitter so they always go together.

Here a photo of the prototype with Vlock plates on both ends for testing purposes. ;)

This sounds very interesting. As there are not many wireless solutions available for the BM cams.
Which frequency will be used and do you have an estimated price yet?

Skaarhoj had a solutution with their wifi-b4-link. But they do not produce it anymore.
Als was 2.4GHz which was not ideal.

it is a well known 2,4Ghz system. But not on wifi. The modules we use have a range of estimated 200 meters line of sight. But i have seen people push these RF units with special antennes up to 14kilometer line of sight..

And while the teradek transmitters are on 5,2ghz the control is down on 2,4Ghz so we are running license free, And have no interference with the video link. Just need some additional filtering in our antenna to eliminate RF interference of the 5.2Ghz link that is pushing loud direct near the receive antenna. ;)

Working on the software and housing design now. But still waiting on Teradek to get aditional information about the mounting holes and power connector to screw the unit to there transmitter.

Will it be possible to use it in combination with a wireless SDI transmitter?

That is the whole purpose of this device ;) To have CCU control for your wireless camera.

We are designing the housing that it can be screwed onto the Teradek Bolt 4K (Which has standard hole pattern for vlock plates to be screwed on.) So you have your Wireless transmitter and Wireless CCU together as 1 unit between 1 set of vlock plates. :)

Hello Daniel, when will your product be available? I would need it with V-mount-Plates on both ends.

Best regards!

Well just arrived in the mail.. Teradek Bolt4K. :D :D

A lot of software still to go. As the project have been halted for some time due too a external dev project. But starting to take shape. And want to finish this soon. 8-)

Greetings,

Have you made any progress on this project?

I am interested in the solution. We are purchasing the Teredek 4K and having telemetry would be great when working wirelessly.

Hello, I have discovered that the Cinegears Ghost Eye 800T[/b][/b] has the ability to control Tally and bidirectional talk-back. However, I think it does not provide CCU control for the camera.

It's important to bear in mind that the talk-back and tally are provided via the Tx and RX units, not the camera, but the tally signal works through the switcher. I do not know what the quality of the talkback audio is.

So a lot has been going on lately in our office. And since May we had a couple of big jobs interferring and taking up our time and energy to work on this project. But while the photos on the last post of me here were a Mockup when i just got my Teradek Bolt4K 750 in.

So now we are closing upon a deadline were the WRCU will be used for a big national radio event, and we put 2 weeks of coding hard and solving hardware issues that were still present to the RF section of the unit.

The prototype is working now, The camera is controlled by RF and we are running small scale range tests now with the teradek along it's side.
So far it looks promising.

I will try to put in a video in the next few days of the system working. But for now only got a few photo's to show.

Hi Daniel! We works with BM cameras for last few years and dreamed of such a solution that you created. So, when do you plan to start production of this device and can we purchase it from you?

Do you plan on making a small form factor version (or even a PCB module for OEM integration work) other then Vlock for integration with POV or other applications using BM Micro studio cameras for example?

No the problem is that the Vlock is loaded full with 3 PCB's inside.. I made it as small as possible already. The problem is that we need to use the BMD SDI shield for SDI Command generation onto an SDI signal. This board already takes a large place in the design. ;)

But the Micro studio is also controllable by PPM control which is basically Digital Servo control signals from an RF RX for planes and stuff.. Those are small enough ;)

Hi,

Thanks, and understood re: size of shield constraints. Our challenge with the Micro and PPM/SBUS is the limited parameters available, we need full remote/wireless CCU/paint control on these smaller cameras as well. Great to see your innovations - keep up the awesome work.
