Help with Wirecast Pro & UltraStudio Express

PostThu Jul 04, 2013 5:54 pm

Hi all,

First post here, looking for some help.

I have an UltraStudio Express Thunderbolt, connected to my Mac running Wirecast Pro.

I have connected to the UltraStudio one camera via HD-SDI and one camera via HDMI. I want to be able to mix from one to the other in Wirecast, but it seems to only see one at a time (if one is active, the other isn't...) therefore I cannot cross-fade between them.

Is this just the way it is, or am I doing something wrong?

If there is no solution to this with my set-up, can you please advise how I can achieve what I wish (to be able to mix between the two inputs).

Thanks!

Hi!

The Ultra Studio Express only has the option to use one input, but you can choose either to use HDMI or HDSDI. So, if you want to mix between them, you need a kind of mixer. I have an Ultra Studio Express myself, and one Blackmagic ATEM Television Studio (video mixer).

My setup with WireCast is connecting all cameras to the ATEM Television Studio mixer, and send one output (PGM) to Ultra Studio Express and further on with thunderbolt to the MacBook.

Camera -> HDSDI -> ATEM Televison Studio -> HDSDI -> Ultra Studio Express -> Thunderbolt -> MacBook -> Wirecast

Did that make any sense?

Thanks for your help guys.

So, it seems that the UltraStudio Express is the wrong product for what I want to do.

I just assumed that because it has HDMI and HD-SDI in I would be able to use both together at the same time. I am sure that nowhere in the advertised specs does it say that I cannot do do this, so I feel I was mislead.

This is disappointing.

Perhaps you could answer another question for me:

If I bought two (or indeed more) UltraStudio Mini Recorder boxes and plugged them into 2 separate Thunderbolt ports, would Wirecast then be able to see 2 separate devices simultaneously and mix between the two?

I would guess yes as well, but never tried. Don´t think you should buy more than two anyways, only two thunderbolt-ports on the Mac!

I realise that. My next thing to investigate is if there are any devices that would allow me to plug three or more into one Mac?

I've just realised I made a mistake with this whole thing (as I didn't have the product to hand while writing my original post).

It's not actually a UltraStudio Express I have, but rather an UltraStudio 3D!

Have they been discontinued?

The major difference of course is that the 3D has 2x HD-SDI ins, and I am wondering if that changes anything? Should I be able to use both HD-SDI inputs simultaneously in Wirecast, or is it still the same as the situation with the aforementioned Express (one input at a time)?

Thanks all!
