Resolve 9.0.3 resize problem

PostThu Nov 08, 2012 3:28 am

Hæ guys,

I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong here but I just noticed that there seems to be a pretty severe quality drop in the footage I'm using . It's 720x576 being scaled to 1080p but it seems as if the resolution is half of what it should despite being scaled - does this make sense ?

I have a reference/offline VT that is 640x360 but seems to have more definition than the source footage, even though the reference is not being filtered

out of curiousity I just turned off any scaling Resolve was doing and compared it to the actual source file:

Am I losing my mind ? Is there something I'm doing wrong ?

Hi, so a HD timeline? Image scaling is set to sharper filter? Anti-alias is off? and in monitoring settings... its set to basic?

Hi Peter,

I checked all of these settings, changed a few of them to see what the effect would be an no major improvement .

A bit of snooping around, and this is a mixed media conform - it only appears to happen to DVCam footage...

If I try to replace the footage using the "change source folder" option, Resolve simply freezes - PWOD .

So I think the issue you have is, standard definition DVCam images, when up sampled to HD resolution don't look as you expect them to. Correct?

The DVCam source is 720x576 and 4:1:1 sampled, when up sampled to HD 1920x1080 4:4:4 we don't improve the resolution or colour sample depth. All we can do is represent the original image in the new resolution. In the 1080p image you have only 576 source lines... each is doubled to get to 1080.. well its not quite that simple but you get the idea... we cant make resolution, we can only approximate the pixel data for the missing lines.

For this task, consider a purpose designed tool, like the BMD Teranex.

oh don't worry I'm not expecting that software can magically create detail from nowhere and make SD footage like HD . The issue is more that when compared to the quality of the original file, as I linked, the quality is less in Resolve than in anything else . I realise I would get image degradation but not to the point where the image is half what it should be .

This only applied to DV Cam footage, as most of the media for project was interlaced I ran it through a process and wrote out Prores 422, having replaced these files the resolution problem went away .

Fortunately I needed to do this anyway :)

On an unrelated note is there a list somewhere of what still image formats Resolve supports ? the .jpg files I was given don't seem to appear in the media list .

Still image files are supported for gallery stills. If you rt-click on the gallery and select import I think you can see the list of supported stills.
In the media pool we support a single frame DPX.
