CANON 5D TRANSCODE SPEED SLOW

PostWed Nov 21, 2012 8:13 pm

I have a Mac 12 core with 16GB, nVidia 660ti, and a SAS raid that gets 1000MB sec. Running OSX 10.8.2 and Resolve 9.0.2.

When I transcode 2K Alexa with a LUT and burnins I get 44fps.

When I transcode 1080p Canon 5D files with not LUT or burnin I get only 26fps.

What's up with that? I'm sure in the past I used to get 50+ fps.

There might be an extra process it's being taken through.
Check out the Avid forum. Do a search which should be interesting for you. A stack of info.
Looks like you have a nice system. Maybe soft on graphics though.
As a matter of interest, what raid system are you using?

I'm very happy with the system for the 2K just a little underwhelmed by 5D. I suppose there is an overhead in uncompromising the H264 but maybe things can be optimized in the future.

The raid is a 16TB Arreca from Rent-a-Raid.

Canon 5D footage is encoded with H.264, a very CPU-intensive codec which cannot be passed onto the GPU. Alexa footage (assuming you mean Prores) is relatively easy to decode. LUTs, burn-in, and nodes are handled by the GPU, so those things probably make a minimal difference here. I'm guessing if you watch your CPU usage while transcoding the Prores, it will be low — a sign that something else is the bottleneck (probably the GPU).
While transcoding H.264, I'll bet your CPU usage is near 100%. If that's not the case, let us know, and there might actually be a problem.

Hi Elliott,

In order to take advantage of GPU acceleration of MainConcept H.264/AVC, the following is required:
Sorenson Squeeze or am I missing something.
