Truly, spend a few extra bucks and get the Sandisk's. I own that Lexar he's talking about. IT DOES NOT WORK IN RAW and even DROPS FRAMES IN PRORES. I bought my Pocket with that exact Lexar SD card as a package from a huge NYC reputable dealer. It literally took 3 weeks for them to take me seriously and convince them to stop selling that card bundled with the Pocket, embarrassing. "Our product specialist had listed this card as working with the camera...." I had them get a Pocket and try it, it failed. Typically in ProRes the Lexar will record for a bit perfectly and then drop frame after frame without you noticing.

Specs seem correct, but it just doesn't work right. In the end, don't learn the hard way like I did and hand over footage with dropped frames. Don't be that guy/girl. The Sandisk's work.

I called Lexar, (maybe try a replacement?) they said send the card back to us: Boise. They sent back a used one/return. I said, um what the heck? They said Oh thats just what we do and the card should work with the specs. Nope.

I just saw at B&H that they have the 128, 256, and 512 Sandisk Extreme Pro. However I don't see them to be approved for the BMPCC. The ratings looks the same as the 64Gb. However, I wouldn't put all my eggs in one basket so I'll stick with my 3 64's. Maybe I'll get a 128 or 256 down the road... but not yet. I don't have the need to shoot RAW for more than 15 minutes at a time since most of my work are coordinated short takes. When I shoot something that I don't have to do [much] grading, I can have a longer footage shooting Pro-Res LT or proxy.

Laszlo, you can go up to 512GB in terms of what Sandisk now offers. The largest may not yet appear on the approved list but they are endorsed by Grant Petty.

Recent experience...

From the Approved list, I tried this on in a Pocket Cam last week, camera had latest firmware installed.

- Sandisk 32GB 45 MB/sec Extreme SDHC UHS-I
Card not recognised by the camera.

A Sony 32GB 40MB/sec SDHC UHS-1 card also had the same result.

Samsung 64GB "EVO", SDXC UHS-1 card (Micro with adapter card) was recognised by the camera, but dropped frames when recording ProRes.

All three cards function correctly in other cameras (K-01, 5D2, HD7, Hero3+)

Hi Blackmagic,

Any word on "SanDisk 64GB Extreme U3/UHS-I SDXC 60 MB/s" (SDSDXN-064G-G46) being added to the list?

I'm fine with getting a "Sandisk 64GB 45 MB/sec Extreme SDXC UHS-I", (SDSDX-064G-X46)
just curious if the newer Extreme is/will be compatible, because I'd rather buy a faster card for the same price

Thanks

I may have missed it somewhere, but, I'm trying to find out how much RAW footage a SanDisk extreme pro 32gb and 64gb can hold before it is full? Does anyone have any estimates?

Has anyone tested the new-ish SanDisk Extreme SDSDXN-032G-G46 UHS Speed Class 3 SDHC Class 10 32GB 60MB/s* card yet? Apparently it replaced the Extreme 45MB/s* a while ago. Those product names get ever more ridiculous... Since it's on paper the old Extreme from the approved list, only faster, I assume it will work with all flavours of ProRes on the BMPCC?

Thanks!

Chris, you are probably correct but each new card version likely has new firmware and will need to be certified by BMD before you can be assured it works.

Thanks Rick! Since I'm new to the BM world and the link in the starting post doesn't lead to any list, where or how can I see when a new card has been officially approved?

One further thing to note, just in case it's been missed.

All SDHC cards used in the Pocket Cam need to be reformatted in exFat.

The SDHC 'standard' is for HC cards to be Fat32 and XC cards to be exFat.
The official SD Formatter app from the SD industry association detects the card type an formats in the correct partition type.
This works for cameras that fully support the SD standards. The Pocket Cam doesn't.
It only supports exFat, so you have to reformat the card, choosing exFat instead of the correct type.

Frome my own experience, the 32Gig Sandisk 45Mb/s card on the approved list will drop frames in ProRes, especially if there's large amounts of movement within the frame.

The 32Gig Sandisk 95Mb/s card will do ProRes and Raw.

When I got my BMPCC I bought a Best Buy "Pixtor", which seems to be a SanDisk 'store' brand for Best Buy, type SDXC card, which had a read rate of 80MB/s, and since I was only interested in ProRes at the time... well... given the cost of the approved 95 MB/s card... I have had no problems with drop outs shooting short sequences, under 2 minutes.

I realize that some people may have need for longer takes, but since I'm mainly looking to narrative short film work, any take of mine is < 1 minute in almost all cases, and definitely less than 3 minutes at the most.

Note to Chris: I rolled the dice with one of these new Extreme 32GB 60MB/s cards. It recorded ProRes HQ with no problem in my testing. So I bought three more. I guess it was not a fluke; they all work, too -- with HQ. But this card quickly begins to drop frames in RAW.

Which Transcend card are you using, Ivan? I've tried a couple, including a 600x 90MB/s class 10 speed class 1, which according to the specs should record ProRes, but it failed miserably. It could not even keep up with ProRes Proxy for very long.

The slower Transcend class 10 cards, which you would think could record Proxy, are not even recognized by the Pocket, in my testing.

So you have found a Transcend card that works? Does it work for ProRes HQ, or just the lower data rates?

My guess is there are no Transcend cards that can keep up with RAW.

Thanks for the info, I too have been puzzled as the 60mb/s Sandisk Extreme is supposed to 'replace' the 45mb/s ones, but haven't had anyone mention anything on whether it'll be suitable for the BMPCC. I'm just looking for a bunch of cards for the Prores flavors so these will do nicely.

Side note: Just bought a bunch of these from Amazon at US$35 apiece for the 64GB ones

Anyone have any info on the U3 versions of the Sandisk Extreme Pro 95/mbps cards that are on the approved SD cards list? The list doesn't actually differentiate between U1 and U3, so I'm assuming these cards are the same and will work; but was wondering if anyone else has actually tested them:

Last year I made a list of SD Cards for the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera, most hasn't changed from that list but we now have a few more options, a "new" official speed designation, UHS Speed Classification 3 or "U3"; the "U3" designation simply means the cards minimum write speed is 30MB/s (that's MegaBytes). Many "U3" cards are just rebadged "U1" cards that meet the "U3" speed requirements. According to the SD Association all "U3" badged cards officially sustain 30MB/s so they they should all work for ProRes HQ (27.5MB/s) without any dropped frames, though Blackmagic seems to favor Sandisks it would be alarming if non-Sandisk "U3" cards are still consistently having trouble with ProRes in the Pocket.

Also Magic Lantern's 1080p24 Raw is 83MB/s (MegaBytes). The older Canon DSLRs that only support Class 10 SD cards are limited to 21MB/s so they cannot record HD Raw, they start to drop frames and stop recording after about 2 seconds, they can only record Raw in a non-HD of 960x540 at 24fps. The newer Canon DSLRs that support UHS-1 SD cards are limited to 40MB/s which is still not enough for 1080p24 RAW but just enough for Canon's 720p 24fps Raw. Blackmagic on the other hand designed their software to only require 57.6MB/s to record 1080p24 Raw by using Cinema DNG in a 12bit container and Lossless compression with a slightly variable bit rate rather than Magic Lantern's/Canon's bloated 14bit CR2/DNG frames; so I think Blackmagic actually designed their software more efficiently but why only Sandisk cards work is anyones guess and better left to the conspiracy theorists.

Justin Battle wrote:I may have missed it somewhere, but, I'm trying to find out how much RAW footage a SanDisk extreme pro 32gb and 64gb can hold before it is full? Does anyone have any estimates?

Since the Pocket uses a variable bit rate for Raw the number may change a little but these are the worst case scenarios when you have a lot of details filling the frame for the entire recording:

For CinemaDNG 72MB/s (30 FPS):
128GB (28 mins)
64GB (14 mins)
32GB (7 mins)
-------------------------------------------------------
For CinemaDNG 60MB/s (25 FPS):
128GB (34 mins)
64GB (17 mins)
32GB (8:30 mins)
-------------------------------------------------------
For CinemaDNG 57.6MB/s (24 FPS):
128GB (36 mins)
64GB (18 mins)
32GB (9 mins)

Any real world experience yet with the newer SanDisk 128GB Extreme Pro UHS-I U3 SDXC Memory Card (Class 10) cards? I have one on backorder. I will mostly shoot 422HQ so the minimum of 30MB/s should cover me. That said I do long shoots of events so I have concerns. Also I would want to be able to shoot RAW when I care to. Just curious if anyone has tested these new cards. Not finding much for real reports.

Grant Petty was quoted in the Sandisk Press Release on the 128, 256, 512GB Extreme Pro cards for the BMPCC. Blackmagic still doesn't seem to list them as approved. Is this coming, is there an issue, waiting for a firmware compatibility update?

Hoping Blackmagic gives us an official status update on these.

Got my SanDisk 128GB Extreme Pro UHS-I U3 SDXC Memory Card (Class 10) in from B&H today. Two test filming in 1080p24 RAW I was able to fill the card with no hiccups! One 40+ minute long roll. Latest Firmware and HFS+ formatting.

Have you really got more than 40 minutes footage in a single RAW sequence on this card?
It sounds really strange, because it gives approximately 13 minutes in RAW when filming in 1080p23,98 on 64 Gb SD card.

Yes. But to be fair it was a static shot. I got the card last night. I had a very short time before needing to sleep. I put it in, formatted it. Set it to 1080p24 RAW, hit record and put the camera down. It ran until it killed a battery. I reformatted it, plugged it in and did the same thing. At 41min the red indicator said :03 and there had been no warnings of dropped frames. I hit stop and put the rig away and went to bed. I'm very new to RAW but I believe these were my findings. If I understand the nature of the lossless CinemaDMG compression, it will differ depending on content. I assume a still shot of a wall could be compressed to a maximum. But those were my findings.

Craig, apparently the list of approved SD cards was updated today and the 512GB U3 95/90MBs card was approved for raw.

The following SD cards are recommended for CinemaDNG RAW recording:

Sandisk 32GB Extreme Pro 95 MB/sec SDHC UHS-I
Sandisk 64GB Extreme Pro 95 MB/sec SDXC UHS-I
Sandisk 512GB Extreme Pro 95 MB/sec SDXC UHS-I

Why not 128GB?

Clinton, it may be BMD has not finished their formal testing of the 128GB and 256GB cards yet. In the past BMD only publishes those that pass, but that leaves us to wonder what has failed or what hasn't simply not been tested.

I really appreciate Jason sharing his experience. If in fact only 3 cards are officially approved for RAW by BMD and those EXACT cards are no longer available, it seems that BMD needs to spend a few more testing resources to qualify SD cards for RAW recording on the BMPCC that can actually be purchased.

Or, positively confirm that no other cards work and direct us to eBay. See my picture here:

I strongly believe all this speculation for the correct SD cards and the handful of Sandisk supported cards can be put to rest if and only if BMD put some effort in coming up with a firmware update that will make any brand class 10 UHS-x cards usable (maybe starting at 30/Mbs advertised (not sustained) write so we can use pretty much a lot cheaper cards. Find a good pre-write buffering algorithm or something and implement it in firmware so that it will handle the BMPCC fast write burst which is requiring the card to have a very fast sustain write speed.

This would be great but in the interim, it seems not that difficult to devote a few more resources to qualifying the versions of the cards that are readily available. I have a support ticket initiated with BMD and the tech rep indicated he had forwarded my question to the product manager.

It seems logical that the SanDisk UHS-1/U3 cards would work (following the now hard-to-find UHS-1 only cards). So how hard is it to confirm this and publish the results?

You can't have a camera that does RAW but no available storage media on which to capture the files.

Thanks, Jonas, for your confirmation. I'm guessing if you could not buy a current SD card for RAW in the BMPCC there would be enough noise that we would all know.

FYI : Even though it's not officially recognized by Blackmagic just yet, the new 128 GB Sandisk Extreme Pro works just fine in RAW mode. Haven't shot anything longer than four minutes but no drop frames anyway.

Folks at my local filmmaker meet-up had said that they have been having good results with the new Samsung PRO 64Gb on their BMPCC. Has anyone in this forum or with BMD tested it? Price is reasonable.

Hi

I shoot a lot in ProRes Proxy. I do lecture recording where continuous shooting wins over fine image quality. Does anyone have any experience with what cards will work with this codec?

With ProRes Proxy being 30% of the ProRes data rate of 145Mb/s, so approximately 44Mb/s (or 5.5MB/s). I would assume that many cards would fit this criteria, right? When I tested some Class10 cards I had around over USB3, with BMDs own disk speed tool, they showed up as 10MB/s cards. But the little BMDPCC wasnt having any of it!

Thanks in advance.

Im all confused about which cards are fast enough or not, cant seem to find a reliable source other than " works fine here"
BMPCC in DNG raw, whats the highest output bitrate?
If i read correctly, the Sandisk 64GB Extreme Pro 95 MB/sec SDXC UHS-I will be more than enough, or do i need to step up to the class 3 cards to be sure?

I got a whole day heli shoot ahead of me, with continious shooting from 30-60 mins, whats my best bet here, 128gb cards minimum?
Also im thinking prores will be more than good enough, so maybe i can manage with 64gb cards? How many minutes on the highest prores on a 64gb card then?

Cheers!

Start here:

These are cards BM have tested and found to be reliable.

It's more than just the speed rating that you need. Some cards are rated at high speeds but can't sustain those speeds over long periods. Best to run with cards on the BM list.

Julian, If this is a shoot that is other than narrative (on set) filming, I suggest shooting Pro Res. If you are doing events, you can get on a 128gb about 1 hour using Pro Res 422 and close to 2 hours using Pro Res 422 LT. When I am shooting documentary on my BMPCC, I just use Pro Res 422 at the best. Most of the time, I can go by with 422 LT. Basically you get everything that Pro Res HQ or 422 has on LT except for the speed. So I really don't lose much and quality wise it is still good. It give you more on storage and a lot less time and trouble grading. On a day shoot that requires continuous shots, I bring with me a couple of 128gb SD Extreme Pro or 1 - 128Gb and 2 - 64Gb SD Extreme Pro. Don't be hell bent on shooting RAW unless you are doing some kind of creative short or feature and need the flexibility in Post. I shoot mostly narratives these days so I shoot Raw on the BMPCC; I always have a 128Gb and a couple of 64gb SD Extreme pro and an external 3Gb drive to offload the footage to. When I shoot Raw, on the 128Gb I get about 29 mins and on the 64gb about 14-15 mins. My scene shots are not long... longest I had to do was 2 minutes on a take; more time is taken setting things up but that is just the nature of creative filming. Since there is a lot of set up in between, I offload the footage from the SD into my external HD and reformat the SD card each time a scene is done shooting. That effort only takes about 3 or so minutes so not a big deal. On event shoot, you don't have this kind of luxury so I shoot Pro Res and use a reasonable codec type - mostly 422 LT. I hope this helps.

Hey guys, I've been trying to spread this around to all the SD card forums, but I recently tested the PNY Elite Performance 256 GB Card (P-SDX256U395-GE) and found that it works fine with the BMPCC with all formats except raw (which makes me very sad). I think this is the most competitively priced card, or it at least was when I bought it at $89.99.

I know it's not on the list of approved cards but does anyone have experience with SONY cards working?
Amazon has a flash deal and was wondering if it's worth getting ...

Hey,

In response to the list of approved SD cards, the main bulk of them are all by SanDisk. I'm aware that Lexar makes some great UHS-II cards, that are 150MB/s, and are class 3 (Search up on google Lexar 128GB UHS-II and it should come up). According to Lexar's website, these cards are compatible with any UHS-I reader. As this is a cheaper alternative to the SanDisk cards mentioned in the list, I would love to know if these will be compatible with the new BM Video Assist as that's what I'm planning to use it on.

Oh, and also the Lexar UHS-I, UHS-I speed class 3, which has the same specs as the SanDisk pro card (95MB/s). This looks like the same card that was mentioned earlier in this post, but this card is 633x rather than 600x. I was wondering if this would work with the Video Assist as well.
Thanks!

I would very much like to know about the Lexar 1000x cards also. I have seen 1 post about it on B & H and it seemed to have worked but not in a certain format... Not sure if the guy formatted the card properly or what the case was. So more information would be great. Because regardless of price, it is good to have some competition against sandisk to even out the playing field and keep development pushing forward. One of the main purposes blackmagic developed its cameras.

Only the SD cards on the list have been tested and recommended by BMD:
https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/support/faq/43083

Using other cards is at your own risk. "YMMV".

You want the U3 version for Raw, or you might get dropped frames.
