Iris control problem

PostTue Aug 06, 2013 7:51 pm

Hi,

I received my BMCC EF one month ago and i have a new problem that came from nowhere, the iris control doesn't work anymore ! I am not able to change the aperture manually or with the "Iris button". Before, i was able to change it with both of my lenses and now, on the tokina 11-16, it make a mecanical noise when i push the "Iris" button like if the aperture was stuck, the information on the BMCC's screen change to "f 2.8 to f 22" but it doesn't really change the aperture.
I was on the 1.2 firmware, i uptaded to the latest (1.4) and it doesn't work.
I tried any configuration: power supply/ no power supply, RAW/prores, Film/video mode, with SSD/whithout SSD, recording/ not recording

EDIT: The "iris button" was not working with the sigma 28-70 but at least i was able to use the two other button to change the aperture.

Do i need to contact Blackmagic or can we reset the BMCC to the factory parameters ?

Here is my stuff:
BMCC EF (v1.4)
Lenses: Tokina AT-X 116 PRO DX II, Sigma 28-70mm 2.8
SSD: San Disck Extreme 240 Go

Sorry for my english, i am a french student

If it's just on one lens, it's probably the lens. This happened to my Canon 17-55 and I had to send it to Canon to get fixed. It was used, and the electronics went on the fritz.

Still that sounds like the new Tokina is failing. Perhaps not though. You can reapply the 1.2 firmware from BMD's Support site and let us know if that helped.

Also: If you have access to another BMCC or Canon EOS camera, test your lens on it. Does it work properly on another camera, or does the issue occur there, too?

I had same problem with my Canon 24-70L. At first it worked well, then some problems with iris occurred and at last it stopped working like you described. Lens seemed ok (I tried with 5DM2 body). All I did was taking lens off and putting it back on. Did it few times with camera on and off. Suddenly it worked again :) Dunno what was wrong with it.

It might be worth checking that its not a communication error, by making sure all the contacts are clean on the back of the lens. Cleaning with an eraser by gently wiping across the contacts is what I recommend before sending anywhere...... Good luck.

Hi, any news on this? I seem to have the same problem. I have two BMCC´s and the problem only occurs on one of the BMCC´s. Really annoying and It happens randomly with different lenses. Its very scary when on set, not knowing if the camera is going to malfunction. :(

Hi,

After many emails to the BM support, i sent the BMCC to BM and i just received a mail:

"The camera has been received and tested thoroughly and I have the results of the test below:

On the latest version of the firmware (1.4.2), I tested the camera on a Canon 24-70mm and a Canon 35mm, the iris could be manually adjusted and automatically adjusted when the 'iris' button was pressed.

The camera hardware is working correctly, however a firmware update may have affected the compatibility with the lens you have used this with.

The camera has been updated to the latest firmware and is not demonstrating the reported behaviour.

I will have the camera returned to you."

I am afraid to hear that it is a firmware issue ... I hope to at least control the iris even manually or i will not be able to see what i shoot ...

At least, the customer service is very good ...

You know what, you say it's on your Tokina 11-16? Same thing happens to mine! And no one else seemed to mention they had that issue with theirs. You're not alone!

I am having the same problem with my Canon EF-S 10-22. I can control iris with all of my other lenses except the 10-22.

HI folks, I am new here and just wanted to mention an interesting problem with a 24 - 70 L V1 Canon Lens.

When connected to the camera initially the iris does not function. Switch back and fourth from video to film mode pressing the iris button and suddenly the iris works and remains working until I remove the lens. Sounds like something in the firmware but thought it might help someone.

Cheers Alan

I am still having Iris issues. I've tried every trick in the book to get them to work but there's always a 60% chance that I will have issues while shooting. I have upgraded to 2.0 firmware and my most used glass (canon 24-70 and canon 16-35) still have iris issues. They sometimes get stuck "shut" and sometimes they get stuck "Open". This has happened 3 times on shoots and is unacceptable. Blackmagic, are you working to fix these issues with performance with EF Lenses?

I am also having a problem with my BMCC 2.5 and the canon 24-70 2.8 lens. I will turn the camera on and it will show the previous aperture setting for a moment then will close it completely and the setting will switch to f32 and become unresponsive after that. I didn't have a problem previous to the firmware upgrade. Hopefully this can get resolved with the next update, but for now I will be downgrading the firmware.

Hi,

It is your lenses that need to be recalibrated, it's not the camera. Contact the lens maker.

Not all Canon lenses play nicely in BM cameras, see the EF lens compatibility post at the top of this forum.
viewtopic.php?f=2&t=45950
That said, the 24-70 is on the list. What firmware ver. are you using on the BMCC?

Try running Camera Firmware ver 3.0, their may have been some small bug tweaks that were implemented since V2.1, even though not specifically mentioned in the release notes. I remember Kristan saying to use 3.0 or 3.1 to bring the older cameras up to date.
