Fusion 8 & Resolve 12 - Cross Workflow? Custom Scripts?

PostTue Oct 06, 2015 10:31 am

Hey Fusion community,

Has anyone coded a link between these two applications? or at least have a quick workflow to go between them easily? I'm considering Fusion Studio, even mainly as a colorist that does some comp work, as it seems like a great way to manage shot & if its required to go between Resolve and Fusion easily (aside from render out \ import ofc).

If Rony Soussan happens to be in the forum, we discussed this possibility at a local BMD event in Burbank recently. Was just curious if this was possible, even if some aspect of it was automated.

Many thanks,

Jason

But there surely must be plans for having these applications to integrate with each other, right? Nothing like that coming with v8?

I have no idea at the moment what the long term integration plans are beyond 8, but for now, XML in/out has to be the way.

Oh, that's a bit surprising seeing the effort put into both Resolve and Fusion, you would think the idea was to to make them work together like Adobe's link thingie - an absolute non issue for me, though, as I don't edit at all since years, just interesting to know how BMD looks at the future of all this stuff... :)

As Product specialist, I am simply stating what I know and don't know. Future development plans are not openly discussed for obvious reason.

Hehe, cool beans, Rony. I wasn't after the BMD board classified 5 year strategy... BMD aquired two applications, one for grading (now also editing) and one for compositing, making them work together seem like the most reasonable thing ever imagined. But it wasn't my intent to stress you on this, it's just that BMD has a history of taking huge leaps - just look at the cameras, from the demo in fall of 2012 to what they offer today - and I'm just curious about the direction of the leaping. ;)

Sorry if I came off stressed.. was not intentional, was more implying that I am in the dark like you regarding the long term plan, and also find it frustrating as a fan. Does read poorly..

Didn't mean to sound offended.. hope I didn't offend you ;)

Naeh man, not offended in any way, it was more like reading this...

Future development plans are not openly discussed for obvious reason.

...and I thought, wow, wait a minute, Rony works at Apple? ;)

The thing is, having access to something like Baselight in Nuke is really nice, so it would be awesome for that kind of functionality in Fusion through Resolve - a Resolve node, basically, it holds a profile, either a preset, one you saved or you add the node and you got a Open Resolve button to create one. A cc-node on steroids, so to speak.

not quite :) I do know plans for the current version in development, and as soon as 8 is out, most likely get involved immediately with 9. It's beyond 8 that I have not been part of, and most likely, that's because the real focus is on 8, which is expected.
V8 is an important step for Fusion's future, it's less of a 'new feature set' release, and more of ground work for us to be able to add features at a faster pace moving forward. Being able to adapt the flow to users needs for instance, those things will advance at a higher pace once 8 is out.

This forum has been awesome for that. We are all very happy about the constructive contribution. While a lot of those won't be in 8, they have certainly shaped how we handle fusion moving forward, and the company has had a chance to absorb the culture of passionate users, and why they stuck around.

I know it's off topic, but real thanks to everyone on the list.

I was super surprised when searching what's new in Lightworks 12.5, because there is already a workflow between Fusion and Lightworks.

It showed a way which I think is quite basic but useful workflow between Resolve and Fusion.

[edit]
Since Resolve has take selector, it would be great if rendered clip from Fusion can automatically become a new take for that specific clip. If all the generated Fusion files can create folders with specific directories accordingly, it would be a Nuke-Studio-like worfklow.

Does the Lightworks integration require Fusion Studio? I see no mention of that in the lightworks documentation.

Better, because you can use the original source files instead of exported tifs.

No, but is only available in Lightworks Pro.

Please - do not forget about Generation. While Fusion>Resolve bridge is most welcomed, a series of improvements into Generation would be sufficient (i.e. better EDL /XML handling / multiple audio / alpha overlays / out of the box scripts )...
there are very few examples how much You can achieve with Gen (a lot), while it can be shaped to "quasi- ftrack / nuke studio" thingie...
as for now i have a trouble of importing EDL from Resolve, and dpx seq relinking...

Really? I wish they had as cheap an integration between Fusion and Avid. Lightworks is looking more appealing all the time ;-)

Generation is key to integration, it's the bridge between all renders/elements/applications and I am a champion of Generation. It will get it's turn :)
