List Your Complete/Intended BMCC Setup

PostTue Nov 13, 2012 4:58 am

***I have created this topic just so everyone can get all the information they require with one click - instead of going through pages and pages of created topics***

Can I ask everyone to list the complete setup they're using or planning to use once they receive their Blackmagic Cinema Camera - this includes;

1. Lens Choices
2. Solid State Drives
3. Battery Solutions
4. Storage
5. Data Transfer
6. Audio Recording
7. Camera Rigs
8. Tripods, Dollys & Stands
9. Lighting Options

List maybe 1 or 2 of each, just name of the item or URL link - this will simply point people in the right direction. Cheers

Tokina 11-16mm F/2.8 Pro for Canon EF Mount
Zeiss Distagon T* 21mm f/2.8 ZE Lens for Canon EF Mount
or
Voigtlander NOKTON 17.5mm f0.95 for Micro 4/3 Micro Four-Thirds Mount
SLR Magic Hyper Prime 12mm f/1.6 for Micro 4/3 Micro Four-Thirds Mount

SanDisk SDSSDX-240G-G25 240GB Extreme SATA III 6G 2.5in Internal SSD

Switronix PB70-BMCC - Lithium-ion Battery Pack 70wh/14.8v

Litepanel Ringlite Mini Kit (For Run & Gun Purposes)

Seagate GoFlex Thunderbolt Adapter

I'm still reviewing my choices regarding tripods/dollys/stands (unsure) & camera rig/cage setup (most likely contineo or wooden camera) - but I would really like to hear some of the audio recording setups people are going for...

I think I'll be adding that to my list :D

Came across a few, but I do think this kessler pocket dolly offers the right quality at the right price point for me.

About data transfer! I'm on a Mac Pro so thunderbolt is out of the question. What I did was to install two raided SSD disks in my computer and one empty SSD-slot that can take the disc from my camera. That way I copy the video to the raided discs while I'm working on it with maximal speed and keep backup copys on external harddrives with firewire 800. Seems to me like the fastest option for Mac Pro users but then again, we'll see when the camera eventually shows up, wont we?

Actually internal buses will limit all ssd speed so you may as well have 4 internal drives for media.

1 optical drive bay for os and 2 bay for ssd.

it will probably help to have os on ssd. i have even striped 2 ssd's but i see not big gain in speed.
i bet internal bus kills it.

Nice rig Alexandre, I have made some similar decision..

Here goes my setup..

BMCC EF version

Sigma
8-16mm -> already purchased

ZEISS EF
35mm f1.4, 50mm f1.4, 85mm f1.4 -> already purchased

CANON L
24-70mm f2.8 mk1 -> already purchased, still hope they make it work, otherwise I change it

Mattebox, Followfocus, Shouldermount from Proaim -> already purchased

RØDE NTG2 shotgun microphone -> already purchased

Battery Solutions same as Alexandre:
1 SWITRONIX Powerbase 70 Battery included Contact Block for Blackmagic -> purchased
1 SWITRONIX Powerbase Charger -> purchased

Light and cheap Manfrotto Tripod -> already purchased
I purchased MANFROTTO 504HD Head with 546GBK Tripod 1 month ago with a really good deal on Amazon but it was too heavy for my usage, I had to give up on it.

So I'm ready to go!!!

Cheers

Lenses will change, but here is my intended setup for the most part.

I already have:

  • Viewfactor Contineo Cage
  • Viewfactor Top Handle
  • Viewfactor MultiForce Rod Plate for tripod mounting the rig in a balanced position
  • Viewfactor IDX Battery Mount

I intend to get:

  • Handle bars for shoulder rig (maybe the Tilta ones)
  • Shoulder pad for shoulder rig
  • A decent tripod and fluid head of sorts. Damn they get expensive quick.

I'd like a 3ft pocket dolly or some sort of smooth slider but they're a $$$ investment for any decent ones.

Talking about TILTA. THey have now superincredible option. RUnner Rig (baseblate, rods, FF, off-set arm, shoulder pad) 660. SUpposed tobe 1300! I just got 2 of them.

And for you guys who are getting Rokinon. Just got my 8 and 14 from BH. Tested them on 5D and 7D. Was not so impressed. So will swap now for Tokina. On 14 starting to look nice, when you go down to f5.6 and 8mm even f8

Well it's obvious from the responses you are getting regarding SSDs, that almost everyone has taken your advice and not wasted their time reading the other topics here and on other forums regarding appropriate SSDs for the BMCC.

I'm so very weary of repeating myself so just read a few of the SSD threads before you commit to buying problematic SSDs as most respondents are planning to purchase. I can't understand the care everyone puts into all their other category responses and yet glosses over the single most critical component. Who cares how sharp your lens is or how steady your sticks if you haven't been able to record your images?

I'm happy if they work for you, Ruben. I have seen other anecdotal evidence where they have failed on the BMCC though so personally I feel safest with the Sandisk Extreme. No doubt there will be many more SSDs over time that will be proven to be great performers on the BMCC. Thanks for your feedback.

I'm kind of fascinated that all you guys are planing to add thousands of $ (and weight) to the camera. My planed setup is much simpler, I guess...

1. Lens Choices -> existing EF glass + maybe a Sigma 8-16mm (for those rare wide shots)
2. Solid State Drives -> existing 240/480GB drives (I'm an IT guy, got plenty of those around)
3. Battery Solutions -> Switronix BMCC solution
4. Storage -> existing
5. Data Transfer -> existing
6. Audio Recording -> none (if I need real sound, I get a sound guy)
7. Camera Rigs -> none (I want to keep it small and simple)
8. Tripods, Dollys & Stands -> existing Manfrotto tripod
9. Lighting Options -> none (if I need real light, I get a light guy)

For me this is a perfect B camera in bigger projects and a (much) better DSLR type of camera for small short films and such. I don't want to lugg around several pounds of additional stuff. I basically just want the camera with a lens. Unfortunately, due to BMs design choice, I HAVE to add a battery solution (which I'll just stuff in my jacket, no need for a rig).

New Camera Rig From IKAN - This may interest a few people, great price point for a rig like this, I've seen cheaper, but this has a venting plate specifically for the BMCC...

Since the camera seems to have a lot of rolling shutter adding weight can only make it more stable to deal with it, don't you think? (Instead of handholding it like a dslr and battling with rolling shutter all over again).

That is true if you wanted to have the camera mobile, even if you used a steadicam approach. But I think remopini intends to use a tripod or other stable gear as do I so a little less of an issue in terms of the rolling shutter compared to true handheld.

Kinda limiting no? I would want to use a camera to the full extent of the cinematographic language. i don't think I can personally move the camera without a rig and an EVF, nor would I want to. Weight is one solution that contributes to minimize the rolling shutter issue, such as: http://www.hurlbutvisuals.com/blog/2012 ... -be-heavy/

I already posted my complete setup here..

The range 16-24mm is quite important I think and I'm still lacking a zoom there.

What is your opinion on the Canon EF 16-35mm 2.8 L II USM used for $620?
It was never mentioned, is there a better alternative in that range? Is it way better than the Tamron 17-50mm?

So far I have:
Sigma 8-16mm
Canon 24-70mm
Zeiss Ze 35 1.4
Zeiss Ze 50 1.4
Zeiss Ze 85 1.4

Thanks.

I have that Tilta BMCC rig in my hands right now with the FF and mattebox (plus V-mount battery plate) and the BMCC is due here Monday. The rig itself is extremely nice. I'm looking forward to finally using the full setup next week on a multi-day shoot. Will report back.

Damn those Tilta rigs look so nice. Are they rock solid? My arm/cage on my rig is a little loose/wobbly. I'm going to have to replace it with a Viewfactor cage or something.

Been very happy with our Tilta rig for the fs700. The BMCC rig is promising so far, too. Solid, generally well thought out. Not featherweight even with quite a few carbon fiber pieces, but not outrageously heavy either.

I have the rigs set up to be configurable from a very minimal setup to much more decked out - from handheld/shoulder to tripod - it's nice to have that flexibility.

Where are you planning on putting the v-mount in relation to the menu, Mike? Will be ordering one of those tilta kits as well, but placing the battery and v-mount behind the screen as it is on their site looks like it could get a little awkward when it comes to accessing the menu between shots.

A way to mount the battery on the side of the rig during tripod use would be ideal. Anyone got any ideas? I think the bebob rig tries to raise the battery above the menu if I remember correctly but it still looked a little awkward.

The battery mount is actually pretty flexible - it's hinged in a couple places. So, the pics they show with it tilted up and blocking the screen are pretty misleading in that it would be very easy to adjust so the battery was flat (perpendicular to the camera, parallel to the rods) and much more out of the way of the screen. Or, dropped down lower than the rods out back.

I'll be playing with getting the rig dialed in with the actual camera in it early next week and will let you know exactly what position(s) we settle on for different configurations.

Wonder if you could include some shots of your different configurations. I like the sound of you transition from tripod to shoulder to really small handheld. Would like to see more detail. Did you get the dovetail?

I'll see what I can do. So, the BMCC rig itself came with two plates: one is relatively small and the other is a much longer, lightweight dovetail. Not sure which I'll be using more until I experiment a little bit with the camera on there.

The Tilta rig I use with the fs700 has a dedicated adjustable shoulder pad, so you can pretty much pull it off the tripod, clip the front handles on, and go handheld - but the BMCC specific rig doesn't have that shoulder pad. It looks like they have a couple options to add them, though, so I may do that at some point.
