Intensity Shuttle USB 3.0 and Mac Mini

PostMon Dec 17, 2012 7:49 pm

Hi,

I'm using a 2012 Mac Mini, which supports USB 3.0. After connecting the BM Intensity Shuttle USB 3.0, the Mac Mini recognizes it correctly in System Information, however Media Express tells me, that there's no device connected. Is there something wrong with my Intensity shuttle, or am I making something wrong?
The Mac Mini is running on OS X Mountain Lion and I've installed the drivers/software from the CD attached to the BM Intensity Shuttle USB 3.0, since there's no available download for this combination on the blackmagic website.

Any help is appreciated & thanks in advance!

Hi,

I'm afraid that Blackmagic Design USB 3.0 devices are not currently supported on Mac OSX. This is something we hope to support in the future, but at the moment it's not possible to say when we might be able to support this. However there is a ThunderBolt version of the Intensity Shuttle which would be more suited to the Mac Mini.

Hi Chris,

Thanks for your reply! I'll try to send back the USB 3.0 version and get Intensity Shuttle Thunderbolt version instead.
Perhaps your company should outline this issue with Mac and USB 3.0 Intensity Shuttle on the website more clearly, because looking at all the information there right now, nobody would think that this combination is not supported at the moment and since more and more Macs support USB 3.0, I'm sure that a lot of Mac users will buy this product, thinking that they can use it as well on Mac as on Windows.

Greetings

I actually will not be so kind as DXFreak. DXFreak said in nice terms an obvious issue that STILL has not been resolved. The BM web site does not clearly state product limitations and it is a demonstration of poor customer service.

I think it is an absolutely failure in regards to customer support selling a product that has no easily identifiable indicators to product limitations.

Before I purchased this USB 3.0 I looked and looked to make sure there was no limitations and that it could be used on the Mac Mini such that I could move from Mac to Windows if needed.

Only after the fact, after hours of looking through configurations do I see a juxtapositional chart after running a google search (not a Black Magic Support search) showing that only the Intensity Pro and the Thunderbolt are compatible with Mac OS.

Black magic owes me a free Thunderbolt Intensity Shuffle or drivers, beta or otherwise, that will support the Mac Mini USB 3.0 configuration.

I read a few bad reviews regarding Black Magic but I thought I would give them a try. Unless this issue is resolved I will be part of the dark side.

Very upset customer.

@MOKANA

Hah, I am not sure what your on about. It's clear if you look at the website and especially at the tech specs that the USB 3.0 devices are windows 7 only right now. Seems to me you did not do your basic research. You want BM to "advertise" that its windows only? You should always check the system requirements before you buy any hardware or software. That is standard procedure in my book. Anyway, relax and exchange your unit for a thunderbolt one or use bootcamp until there are OS X drivers.

Hi everyone... Beside of all considerations one thing is undeniable: USB = Universal Serial Bus... Universal is an easy word. In my opinion Blackmagic have to do something about this issue or at least help the costumer to solve the problem. I use Blackmagic because i trust the hardware, as all the BM users... It work the same way for Mac users, COSTUMER CARE make the difference...

Yes, I have a MacBook Pro and the shuttle thunderbolt works great. I wish the shuttle could capture compressed audio such as Dolby Digital 5.1. The only multichannel audio it can capture apparently is that from an uncompressed source.

I agree. PC's don't have Thunderbolt, and the USB 3.0 one doesn't work on Mac's with USB 3.0. So it leaves you at needing to buy 2 devices if your a cross-platform company. :|

Hi,
I join this discussion without open a new topic.

My company use both Mac and PC, so a truly cross-platform hardware would be greatly appreciated.
In these days we are planning to buy a new external intensity for use it both with laptop and desktop.
But I discover incompatibility between BM’s USB 3 capture card and mac.
I thought that a USB 3.0 was universal, especially because (if I not wrong) the interface is supported directly by Intel’s CPU. So, where is the problem?

I’ve already a 2008 MacPro. Does it works with an extra USB3 controller (sonnet, lindy, etc...)?

Also, does thunderbolt capture devices works with the few thunderbolt-PC’s such as Lenovo?

Thanks

Sure the situation is a bit tricky right now. I do not know if the thunderbolt version works with the PC yet, but i imagine you can find that out by looking at the system requirements for that device. If a windows OS is not listed then its safe to say its not yet supported. The PC space and Apple space were fairly reversed as far as their approach to thunderbolt and USB 3.0. I think everyone needs to realize that it takes a bit of time and engineering but these issues should get resolved on both fronts.

PCs started shipping standard with USB 3.0 much earlier than they were standard on macs. Third party controllers had PC drivers much sooner than (and only a few to this day) mac ones. I have also read that the OS X implementation still has some issues and is not completely at spec. Many mac users have issues with this or that USB 3.0 device on their USB 3.0 enabled macs, even things as simple as hard drives and USB sticks. This will surely improve over time and i am sure that BM wants to make drivers available for their USB 3.0 devices on Mac. Its just going to take some patients. I would not assume that third party controllers will ever work very well (ie current mac pro) unless OS X starts using broader class level drivers. Currently OS X only natively supports the native intel USB 3.0 controller and recently some fresco logic controllers (which are probably going to appear in an apple device at some point like updated thunderbolt display or new mac pro)

On the PC side they are in a similar situation with thunderbolt where windows support is still fairly early and error prone, and few PCs support it and Apple had a 1 year exclusivity lead. It is possible that thunderbolt may never take off in the PC space but assuming it does the support will improve substantially with time.

I guess the point is that the future is bright and that PC users should consider thunderbolt still a developing tech and mac users should consider USB 3.0 similarly. Within months, not years, both should reach maturity and you will have the much desired drivers and support across platforms.

Wow! Perhaps I naively thought that being that this was a USB device I would be able to use this without any problems on my 2008 Mac book pro! It turns out after reading this forum, that a whole segment of the market has been inexplicably bypassed. What a waste of money. I cannot use any blackmagic products with my laptop which I do a lot of audio and video editing on.
Please tell me that there will be support for Macs without Thunderbolt in the very near future. If not, I will not be recommending Blackmagic to any of my industry colleagues.

Not sure what you expect them to do, If you don't have USB 3 or Thunderbolt then there devices won't work with a 5 year old laptop. They are unlikely to bring out an express card device as it's a dying connection so there's no real money in it for them, and I never did see a USB 3 express card that actually ran at the full speed due to overheads, so trying to use one of those never works.
If you have a Mac with built in USB 3 (one of the newer Macs) then there is now support for USB 3 in the latest drivers which people are reporting success with

I concur,
There has been a lot of whining over this issue. Now USB 3.0 drivers for Mac are out. It is a very good development that should satisfy the vast majority of users. If you are using a 5+ year old laptop with discontinued tech (the expresscard slot) you can hardly expect new products developed for you. It would be more beneficial on many levels if you updated to a newer mac. IF you thought you would be able to use the USB 2.0 ports on your mac, that is a very poorly technically informed idea. IF you thought you would be able to use the product with an expresscard to usb 3.0 adapter, that may actually work. If not now, eventually. I suggest you research a driver called GenericUSBXHCI.kext. It works quite well for a grass roots driver and is well regarded for storage devices. It has enabled the Isochronous Endpoints provisions needed to technically use a blackmagic device, but there can be no guarantee it will work well, or at all.

You can try one of the many expresscards based on the NEC/Renesas chipset, or this one based on asmedia may work better:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-2-Port-USB- ... vi-content

It may take some testing to see which chipset works best with the driver and intensity, and chipset options in the expresscard for factor seem pretty limited.

You would have to test it. That's the life of someone who wants to hack together tech to work on very old equipment.

As one more alternative, albeit a very expensive one, you should be able to use a magma expresscard to PCIe chassis and one of the PCIe based blackmagic devices.

I just don't see how the burden here falls on blackmagic or that there is even anything they can do about the issue. Rather it's time for an upgrade.

It is said that the Fresco Logic controller used on this expresscard works with the native OS X USB 3.0 drivers as long as you're on 10.8.2 or later (later probably working better as Apple has steadily improved USB drivers with each update).

Good luck,

I think it is a commercial decision, that BMD does not WANT to support Mac's with the USB3 version of the intensity shuttle. The rather want us to buy the USB3 Version for our WIN PC's and the Thunderbolt version for our Mac's. Very simple: 2 units sold for the same user, instead of one USB3 unit which could be usable for both plattforms. This is not the BMD company I used to know in former days when the same BMD device could be used on win and mac platforms.

Hmmm, if that were the case then why have the latest drivers got Beta USB 3 drivers for the MAC? Which I pointed out in my previous post on here on the 3rd of July

Problem: Mac Mini does not display an image when recording, only audio
Hardware: MacMini 2012, 2.6GHz i7, 4GB DDR3, 512MB Graphics Card
OS: 10.8.4

The interesting thing is that they say it is only supported by Windows 7, yet I have a Macbook Pro Retina also on 10.8.4 which it works BRILLIANTLY on. Any suggestions?

Intensity Shuttle USB 3.0 drivers?

PostTue Jul 30, 2013 9:52 am

So I am reading here that there are Intensity Shuttle USB 3.0 drivers for OS X. If that is indeed correct can someone point me to where I can download them?

I am using a MBP Retina display that has USB 3.0 Hi-Speed Bus and a USB 3.0 SuperSpeed Bus.

The question is, if this even does work, does it work with the MBP Retina as is or do we have to buy a card with this NEC chip in it?

You just download the latest BM drivers for the device, they will include the USB 3 driver. As far as I'm aware it's supposed to work with the built in USB 3 controller

It works fantastic with the MBPRetina without any additional need of parts or products, but not with the Mini... hence the shock and wonder. Any suggestions? The mini is newer than the Retina.

This might help, if you have 1x Thunderbolt (for BM input) and no ports left over for monitor/preview output.

Why would you not just monitor out through the BM thunderbolt device?

Import from what? If you are using a BM device to import then you get a BM device that allows you to monitor out from the same device. Nearly all BM Thunderbolt devices allow you import in and monitor out with the exception of the mini monitor/mini recorder

For those who said that BlackMagic has misled them with the USB3 Intensity Shuttle for use on a 2012 Mac Mini, I really have to disagree. Before I bought the Thunderbolt Intensity Shuttle I researched very carefully and it was clear to me that support for USB3.0 Shuttle on the Mac was a no-no at the time. (I have a friend who bought a Shuttle USB3.0 unit for use on a custom-built Windows 7 PC and it was a waste of money because his machine had the wrong chipset. He didn't read the advice that was readily available!)

I bought the Intensity Shuttle Thunderbolt and the Mac Mini in late 2012 and I've never had a single problem with either when used together. The combo is used all day, every day 5 days per week and gets pretty hot but works fine.

It also works with my 2013 Mac Book Pro.

So, moral to the story: do your research properly!
