Dacvinci Resolve Studio 12.5 beta

PostMon Apr 18, 2016 5:01 pm

I have Davinci Resolve Studio (12.3.2) version - purchased through the Mac App Store. Is it possible run Version 12.5 of STudio simultaneously if I download it through the Blackmagic website? Also, will the Mac App store version of Resolve Studio (12) be updated?

My guess is that 12.5 being in beta it is not in the App Store at the moment. Probably when it is out of beta status it will be avilable in the App Store as well.

Regarding your starting question: yes, both should run fine. I run both the Studio version from the BMD website and the Mac App Store free version on my laptop. This is in case I need to use Resolve, but don't have the Dongle on my laptop. Eventually I'll probably go to the Mac App Store only, but since I love working with Beta software and testing things out I'm not sure if and when I'll make that switch.

One feature I'd love to see them add by the time they release the full (non-beta) version is Chromatic Aberration fixes. They're part way there with the lens distortion toolset. However, even one of the clips from the 4.6K they publicly allowed to be downloaded has Fringing in it. It would be fantastic if they added a tool that allows us to fix those chromatic aberrations in Resolve.

You can approach the problem now by splitting the RGB channels and very gingerly re-scaling the offending channels -- usually red and blue against green. If the chromatic fringing is linear-ish, it can reduce the amount quite nicely. I do this a fair amount with exteriors that need a sky qualification where the corners lose integrity.

and so goes the journey of a thousand steps... is there a lens fixer in Fusion? Now I have to actually start sorting that one out as my new FX-mistress. I will still be "friends" with SHAKE, though.

My apologies for missing the first question. I was not fully awake when reading the post. I am of thinking
of putting both free and Studio version on my computer should the dongle wander off. I hope the free version from the App Store will not replace the current Studio version. Any advice if this can be done?

I need a beefy Mac Pro the old cheese grater is not up to par.

I'd be very careful about having more than one version of Resolve on the same platform. There are a number of limitations associated with the AppStore version that doesn't make it completely compatible with Studio-generated projects.
