URSA & URSA Mini EF Lens Compatibility List - Firmware 3.0+

PostWed Mar 23, 2016 5:12 pm

So as the URSA Min 4.6K is now shipping and many already have their hands on the URSA Mini 4K I thought it might be good to compile an updated Lens Compatibility List.

Many have asked if APS-C lenses will vignette on the 4.6K sensor. Some will (mostly Canon branded), some won't (those that are also available in Nikon mount). So I've added an extra field to test for this.

Here is the template:

Has anyone used the canon CN-E range of lenses on the UM4.6k? Mine aren't showing the Tstop in the viewfinder correctly, just a random aperture that's locked no matter what your lens is set to....

The CN-E lenses have manual aperture. So the camera does not control the aperture and have not way of knowing what it's set to. You read the aperture from the lens barrel kist like you do on any other cine lens.

Really, I didn't realise my lenses were manual.... What I'm saying is that the communication between the lens and the camera should tell the camera what stop they are at so that this information is displayed in the viewfinder.

As the camera is not in control of the iris it won't display the aperture value. Same applies if you use the Carl Zeiss CP.2 Primes or the Schneider Xenon FF-Primes.

That wasn't true when used on the canon c-500, there are contacts on the lens for a reason, one of those is to send information back to the camera. So it should be a reasonable expectation that BM could display that in the viewfinder.

That's on a Canon body with Canon proprietary firmware... you'll obviously get more info passed back and forth between the camera and the lens.

BM has reverse engineered the Canon protocols so they can control EF lenses. Canon don't publish any of those specs so support is limited. One of the reasons for the list above. :-)

I guess I'm hoping that if propriety protocols have been worked out to control iris on L series glass then a simple information readout is beyond the scope of the engineers at BM?

I could make a list as long as both arms of things that should be in the cameras, that on the surface should not be beyond the scope of the engineers... who know... It might be added.

The BMCC had many features never on the spec sheet added later via firmware. So we know the BM engineers are always working on the firmware.

If / when they do add it I'd like them to also include the F-stop date in the metadata of the DNGs. That would be super useful to.

I have the Tamron equivalent/exact knock-off of this Canon lens. When mounted on my mini 4.6k, the aperture setting goes to "A" for automatic, but I can't make any adjustments to the iris. The Iris button, which I think is supposed to function as a "one touch" auto-iris setting isn't working either.

Is this a lens that's just not going to work on the 4.6k? Or is is a firmware update equation?
thanks!

I have two to add to the list

Canon 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM (surprised it's not in the list yet)
No vignetting (FF lens), aperture works, AF works, does not have IS built in

Canon TS-E 24mm f/3.5 L
No vignetting (FF lens - even with TS adjustments), aperture works, manual focus, does not have IS built in

Aperture control: (yes/no)
IS works: (yes/no/NA)
Vignettes: (yes/no) *on the 4.6K

Thank you for this useful thread.
Canon 17-55 F/2.8 is also perfectly working with Mini 4K.

By the way, wide open, the Sigma 18-35 f/1.8 is showing an aperture of f/1.7. I have read that it also happened with BMCC.

Has anyone any update regarding the Canon 70-200 f/2.8 II IS on URSA Mini 4K EF ?
Aperture control works for me one out of ten time, with the firmware 3. I made sure connectors are OK when attaching the lens, and the weight of the lens supported on a plate.

Thanks

Still no aperture and IS for me with Camera 3.2
Works with the 1.4 III Extender though.

Bad supported FW, and not for that lens only....
Basic Canon L still primes does not work in my Mini 4K EF
EF 14mm 2,8 II
EF 24 1,4 II

Sucks....

Sucks....

Please contact your nearest BMD support centre about this.

Did so via my supplier mid april and the answer didnt make my lenses work at all.....

"Thank you for contacting Blackmagic Support.

It does seem a bit strange that some of your lenses aren't working with the Mini Ursa 4K but are with both the big URSA and the Production Camera 4K.
Could you please ask your customer to try the latest firmware which it 3.2.
If this doesn't resolve the behaviour could you then ask them to try Blackmagic Camera 3.0.

I will forward this to our Camera developer team to see if they can provide anymore information on this."

I'm having a few issues with Tamron zooms. All tests were done on firmware 3.2 on the Ursa Mini 4.6k

Lens model: Tamron SP AFA012C700 15-30mm f/2.8 Di VC USD (EF Mount)
Focal Length: 15mm-30mm
AF works: No
Aperture control: No (No readout of aperture or control)
IS works: No
Vignettes: No

Lens model: Tamron SP 24-70mm Di VC USD Canon Mount AFA007C-700 (Model A007E)
Focal Length: 24mm-70mm
AF works: Yes
Aperture control: Yes
IS works: No
Vignettes: No

Lens model: Tamron SP 70-200MM F/2.8 DI VC USD Canon EF (Model A009E)
Focal Length: 70mm-200mm
AF works: No
Aperture control: No (No readout of aperture or control)
IS works: No
Vignettes: No

Sad these don't work. I had IS and aperture control on my FS700 with a Fotodiox EF-E adapter. I hope support gets added soon.

The second time you jump in to make me contact your support for the problem Tim....

I hope your support guys will be in contact soon.
At least an email to confirm the problem if not a solution.

The Mini 4k EF has been around for a while now
and the fact that standard Canon L lenses is
useless is really bad.

My sigma 18-35 f1.8 DC art doesn't have any iris control on my Ursa 4K EF (big one)

Firmware is latest 2.6 (the camera utility won't let me update any further and says its up to date)

EDIT ***** seems like it's my camera that may be the problem it appears to have stopped communicating with any lenses****

Jerry my second point of contact was to try to speed up you getting support on this issue. I am trying to help you get this problem resolved. From what I understand our support guys have tried to contact you. Please let me know if this is not the case.

We have a fix for anyone who lost communication on some EF lenses on URSA Mini 4K between software 2.8.1 and 3.1/3.2. Your camera will need to come in for this, and I expect Mickael Lafont's will as well.

Hi Gavin, yes 2.6 is the latest version for URSA and that lens should indeed be working. It is a very common lens that we use regularly with URSA.

Thanks Adam. Maybe it would be useful to list if the lenses avoid the magenta corner issues?

Will the upcoming Canon 18-80mm lens work with the USM4,6 EF with all its functions (Start/Stop, Zoom control,...) ?

I have a Canon 85mm f/1.8 USM lens that worked on the original firmware, but on 3.3 it no longer seems to be recognized. Anyone else seeing this?

If you are able to downgrade your URSA Mini 4K to 2.8.1 and the problem goes away then this is a known issue that our support guys can fix. The camera will need to come in. I believe our guys have already reached out to you.

Yep - thanks for following up, Tim. I'm currently looking at my calendar and seeing when I can take the downtime with the camera for that fix.

I'm honestly hoping the 4.0 software comes out first and fixes the issue.

Hi,
after update URSA Mini EF 4k to 3.3 the Canon lens L 16-35mm 2.8 II is no longer recognized. The Canon 24-70mm L 2.8 I and the 70-200mm L 2.8 I continue to work properly. Another of my lens, the Canon 100mm macro L 2.8 IS was never recognized whit 2.8 or 3.3.
I live in Rome Italy and I need to continue working with 16-35mm lens, the only alternative is to go back to the old firmware?
I look forward to your response
Thank you
Piero

Just curious, did anyone notice any significant breathing issues with any particular zoom lens?

Most photo lenses will breath. As they are not designed for video work it's not something the manufacturers focus on in the development. I guess the most disappointing one of late is the Sigma 50-100.
