Legacy NVIDIA Cards Not Supported in Resolve 14 or 12.5

PostTue Apr 26, 2016 1:54 am

As has been mentioned in a few other threads, Resolve 12.5 now enforces the requirement that NVIDIA GPU cards support a minimum of CUDA 2.0.

This means that older legacy NVIDIA cards that work in Resolve 12.3.2 and earlier, will not work in 12.5 and later.

If your GPU is in the "CUDA-Enabled GeForce Products" list at this link, it will not work with Resolve 12.5:

https://developer.nvidia.com/cuda-legacy-gpus

This includes cards like GTX-285 and GT-8800.

Cards in the Quadro and Tesla lists that have less than 2.0 support will also not work.

Thanks for the list, it's much easier to see than the Wiki list I linked to in other posts.

Maybe this should be, made a sticky so it doesn't disappear.

Dwaine, forgive my ignorance, but even after browsing the site, I cannot locate the list of supported GPUs.

I am trying to assist someone with this. To be fair, I didnt get much sleep last night, so it's probably just an oversight :)

You click on the link then click on the big icon for the range of GPU you are looking at so Quadro for Quadro, GeForce for GeForce etc, and if you card is in the list and it doesn't say 2.0 or above next to it then it's no longer supported.

The page isn't for supported cards it's for unsupported cards
If your GPU is in the "CUDA-Enabled GeForce Products" list at this link, it will not work with Resolve 12.5:

Which GPU do you have?

Adam,

Was that in reference to my post?
I was more interested in which ones are supported. I understand the link is for those that aren't.

For example, my friend has a ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5730.

Is is only NVIDIA gpus that are supported? If not, do we have a list of GPUs that will work with 12.5?

I am able to see the type of graphics card I have on my iMac (GeForce GT 750M), which seems to be "supported" per the linked lists above (Thank you Dwaine). However, I do not see anywhere - even under the specific device information under the OS X System Report button - any mention of CUDA in/on my computer.

Assuming CUDA is a kind of driver or software, how can one determine if he has CUDA 2.0?

The DR 12.5 appears to run okay, but there is no way I have even scratched the surface of its features. If it runs at all does that mean I am apparently safe, CUDA-wise?

***EDIT*** In System Preferences on the Mac, I just found a CUDA Icon stating, "CUDA Driver Version: 7.5.25." But still nothing about CUDA 2.0 . Is that some very ancient version, or is it an altogether new CUDA product? What am I missing here?

Thanks!

If you click on the link it takes you to a page of legacy cards. If you then go to the GeForce section and expand it that shows older cards that don't support CUDA 2.0. If you card isn't on that list then it should be OK.

If you want to find out the exact version of CUDA supported by your card then look at the top of the page that Dwayne links to and click on the link marked CUDA Capable NVIDIA GPUs. Then open up the Geforce section and look for your card in there.

Thank you, Adam. I guess I am "safe" then.

However, I am still very curious as to the CUDA "2.0" ; is that a version or is it an altogether new variant of CUDA? I cannot find a single mention of "CUDA 2.0" on the web except for the mention of CUDA software versions versus "hardware compute capability" versions... Guess I am lost, since the folks discussing this are living in a place far beyond my technical knowledge.

Oh, well, no worries...I hope.

CUDA 2.0 is an old version of CUDA from around 2010. Different versions of CUDA have different capabilities, so essentially versions before 2.0 don't contain the ability to do what is needed in Resolve which is why versions earlier than 2.0 are no longer supported.
You can read up on it here

Ahhhhh...as I had guessed in an earlier post, above! So, I have VERSION 7.5.x and all is well.

In my own defense (of ignorance), I had assumed that since DR 12.5 is so very spiffy - wearing only the latest in Cat's Pajamas - the original post just HAD to be referring to the latest and greatest CUDA stuff.

Thanks !

Hi there,

is there any option in Resolve 12.5 which has to be turned off as my GTX760 is not on the not-supported-anymore list and still there's an error-message about the graphics card when I open Resolve?

Thanks!

Well that's probably your problem, those drivers are nearly 2 years old. You need to update the Nvidia drivers

Hi,

I've kind of the same problem. I use Resolve 12 with a GTX460 and updated today with the latest NVIDIA drivers. I also tried "Local.GPU.Mode = CUDA" but with no success in getting even a smooth playback from a 1080p MOV file in the Media section. If I update to 12.5 an error message occurs telling me my card isn't supported.

Some specs of my machine:
i7 2600k @ 4.4Ghz
16GB RAM
Fast HDD + SSD

Please, what can I do?

What version of Windows are you using, and what NVIDIA driver version are you using?

The GTX460, while not a recommended card, should work in 12.5, if you have the proper driver loaded.

You should remove the "Local.GPU.Mode = CUDA", as it's not needed, if the proper driver is installed.

Hi Dwaine, thanks for your response. I am on Windows 7 Pro x64 with WHQL 368.39. Playing 4k content with even >100Mbit/sec works like a charm with VLC Media Player, but using Resolve even 1080p content stutters. Thanks for any help. Cheers.

Hi, I am on a Windows 7 Pro x64 machine with 16GB RAM using the current WHQL 368.39 NVIDIA driver. I also have to say I am using XAVC files from a Sony a6000 camera - as I read in another post that this tend to be slow?! However also 4k playback is very slow which is not a problem with the VLC media play even with >100Mbit/sec footage. Cheers.

No real surprise, VLC will be playing back the compressed footage (so only updating partial frames between each full frame), whereas Resolve is most likely playing back the decompressed frames.

@jens: you said Resolve 12.5 said your card isn't supported. If you got that message, Resolve should not work at all.

If Resolve is playing back your footage, the stuttering is likely due to the poor performance of the GTX460 card, which is why it's not a recommended card.

Correct, 12.5 didnt work at all. I installed 12 again. However .5 should work with this card, correct? So youre saying the cards performance is insufficient when uncompressing takes place in advance? Hadnt any issues with Adobe Premiere :/. Whats about the statement that resolve cannot handle XAVC very well? Thanks a ton.

That card SHOULD work in 12.5 with that driver.

The performance is probably a combination of what Adam mentioned relating to the footage, and the low performance of the GPU card for any Resolve related processing/sizing operations.

Hi, take out the GT120 and select the OpenCL mode, not CUDA as you have now in preferences.
Then try the App Store 12.5 again.

Hallo Peter, thanks to answer me.
Gt120 i can't take out because mac os x doesn't boot, but i dob't think the problem is the second card because in the LITE version i don't have any problem where i can choose CUDA...
But i have problem in the studio version where i don't have CUDA selection and see me all cards.
Why the software are differents?
Suppose have a problem with a free version not with the paid one

Ps. Sorry for my english mistake

The App store versions of Resolve, both free and Studio, ONLY support OpenCL processing. That's why there is no "GPU processing mode" selection in the App store Resolve Preferences - Video I/O and GPU area.

The BMD web site versions of Resolve, both free and Studio, support both CUDA and OpenCL processing on Mac.

Your App store screen shots show Resolve using the GT120 as the GPU and the 980 as the GUI card. That's why you are getting the performance warning message. Do you have a display connected to the 980 card? If so, remove that. There should only be displays connected to the GT120 card. After you do that, Resolve should properly use the 980 as the GPU and and the 120 as the GUI card. Things will work better then.

Howdy, I'm a new Resolve user. I've a multi monitor setup, three monitors to be exact. I've managed to get Resolve 12.5 working with my Win7 system when ONLY my GTX 550 TI card, and it seemed fine for just learning the application. However, when I installed an additional legacy 8400 GS card (for my third monitor and lesser applications), it somehow invalidates the use of the working GTX 550 card.

My question is, could there be a way to prioritize how Resolve detects which card is usable and ignore the other non-working cards? Sorry if this has been discussed before, I didn't see anything regarding my specific dilemma with a usable and non-usable GPU card.

I have two GT-620's installed on an Asus Sabretooth 990 MB, toting 32GB of RAM. They aren't on the "bad" list above (nor is the 520, which is what the 620 is rumored to be, just rebranded). According to the GeForce site my cards have above the required CUDA 2.0...but I still get the error message everyone else gets.

If I ignore it and try to open a project my computer crashes. What now?

I have a mid 2012 MacBook and as you can imagine it's not very stable in 12.5. I checked the configuration guide and it looks likes I am going to revert back to Resolve 11. At this stage I am just learning Resolve and I am going to wait it out before purchasing a new machine.

Do you know which version of Resolve would be most stable on my machine? Thank you for your input!

I have a GTX 480 (yes, its barely adequate now but ... ) running Resolve 12.5 on Windows 10. It doesn't appear in the legacy hardware list and appears to support 2.0. GPU-Z tells me that CUDA is enabled and I have up-to-date drivers.
BUT ... I still have no option in the preferences for GPU support. What have I missed?

I was working yesterday in Resolve 12.3, everything was fine, great, wonderful. I wanted to do some nice zoom effects and upgraded to 12.5. After that all my footage lagged, my computer fan went ballistic and my hard drive became unbelievably hot. I had to exit Resolve after 1 minute.

I upgraded to Yosemite 10.10.5 on my Mac, as per the instructions, and even reloaded some of my original footage straight from the source. Same problem. I went to my system status and received these messages below which made me understand it was threading and other problem.

If I uninstall Resolve 12.5, I do have Resolve 12.3 on a backup hard drive from last week. However, will I lose my recently edited footage from 12.5? Is it stored somewhere else?

I am looking at my NVIDIA CUDA driver. It says my version in bold letters is 7.5.25, with my GPU Driver version 10.4.310.41.35f01. It also says CUDA 7.5.30 Driver update is available. Will that help?

Sorry for the long list below, but I wanted you to see it. Please also do answer the question about the uninstall of 12.5, and reinstall of 12.3. Also is there an on-line link to legacy versions of Resolve?
Thanks

Also I just checked my NVidia, It is an Intel Iris Pro NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M. I updated the CUPA. Its not on the list. Why is this lag happening especially with all the error messages I listed before?? I have 8G RAM, a nice SATA 1T drive.

There's no such thing as a "Intel Iris Pro NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M." You have an Intel Iris pro and a GeForce GT 750m, they are 2 separate cards.

You could try going into the advanced preferences in Resolve and adding the following lines

LsManager.3.NumGPUs = 1
LsManager.3.GPUMapping = 0
LsManager.3.GPUMappingEnable = 1
Local.GPU.Mode = CUDA

Adam:
Thanks I did exactly as you stated in the advanced settings, shut down Resolve and relaunched it. Still the fan started going after about 15 seconds and I had to exit.

Here is the system analysis of that session. It looks like your commands got rid of the skip launches, which is something. However, please note the excessive spindumps and wakeups, whatever that is. This never happened in Resolve 12.3. Never.
But, its a small step in the right direction. If you can make this work you get the amazing person of the decade award from me!

I'm not a Mac user so those mean nothing to me, maybe you should contact BM tech support

This is a user forum, not BM tech support. You can get your local contact number/email address from the Support page on the main BM website

Ok, great, but if any other users have anything to say about his, please pipe up if any of you are reading this.
Thanks for your help so far, it moved the problem one step closer to not being a problem.
