BMPC 4K - Third Party external monitor (SDI to HDMI)

PostMon Sep 26, 2016 11:35 am

Hi there,

I recently purchased a Blackmagic Production 4k Camera, as well as a third party (HDMI input) external monitor (with the converters and cables) - but for whatever reason, it doesn't seem to be working.

I've tried 2 different SDI cables and 2 different SDI to HDMI converters, but for some reason there doesn't seem to be any signal reaching the monitor.

The monitor is the: 'Feelworld FW759 7 inch Ultra HD 1280x800 IPS Screen external monitor - and the reviews mention that it has been used successfully with blackmagic cameras.

An interesting side note: The second converter I bought has an LED for 'SDI Lock' - This LED remained off for both SDI cables despite everything being powered up and plugged in correctly. It seems weird that this would be the same for both SDI cables, particularly because I got them from 2 different locations online.

Is there some specialty SDI cable that I'm supposed to be using? Am I supposed to be doing something in-camera to allow the SDI output to function?

Any help would be massively appreciated!

Kind regards,

Ben

Are you outputting a signal the monitor can input?

This is a good question, and I'm not sure!

The monitor is Ultra HD1280x800 and apparently works well with the BMPCC - So I assumed it would at least function with the BMPC 4K

The HDMI modes it supports are below:
HDMI Support Mode
480i / 576i / 480p/576p
1080i (60/59.94/50)
720p (60/59.94/50/30/29/25/24/23.98)
1080p (60/59.94/5030/29.97/25/24/24fps/23.98/23.98fps)

I've set the SDI mode to 'HD' in-camera so would assume it would be compatible

Any further help would be amazing!

Cheers,

Ben

Did you ever manage to remedy this?

I'm looking to buy an external monitor for my Blackmagic Production Camera 4K - and was looking at the Feelworld FW759

But your post is giving me pause!

If BMPC 4K sends UHD signal then it won't work for sure as your monitor support only HD signals.
You set to HD, so it should work.
Also try recording just HD and check if this works on your monitor.

looks like the updated version of the feelworld FW759 does take a UHD signal now

see the specs here: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Feelworld-Came ... ref=sr_1_1

but with only SDI and thunderbolt out on the BMPC 4K, will the signal survive the conversion to HDMI?

You can convert SDI UHD to HDMI- this is not a problem.
New monitor is based on 1.4 chip, so UHD works only up to 30fps.

thanks andrew - much appreciated

anyone have a recommendation for 6G-SDI to HDMI convertors?

preferably reasonably priced!

the blackmagic converter runs at about £230 here in the UK
(https://www.amazon.co.uk/Blackmagic-Des ... 077VYP8HX/)

something more like £100 would suit my budget a little better!

I don't think there is anything cheaper than BM for SDI to HDMI.

thanks again

managed to find a deal on the BM convertor - £160

crazy that the convertor is more expensive than the monitor itself...
