Poor Edit Playback Performance (R14b4)

PostWed Jun 21, 2017 10:52 am

I'm using some 1080p 60Hz DNxHD movs for editing work.

In the media window they playback smoothly (as they did in Resolve 12), and maintain 60Hz.

However when switching to the Edit window I can no longer get smooth playback - when viewing from the media selector to the left viewport the result is choppy.
If I edit a section, place that on the timeline and try to play that back: the results are even worse.

I understand that R14 is in beta, but as we are in the 4th beta build I'm becoming concerned that the performance issues I've been experiencing aren't being ironed out by this process.
How long do the developers expect to produce beta builds? Are they close to what they feel is a release candidate?

Thanks for your help.

Is it just playing without any grading nodes etc?

Yes, it's just raw footage - works fine in R12.5

I've had the same issue with 1080p 60fps DNxHD footage and H.264 footage. The timeline played well in beta 3, though the audio often didn't begin playing for a second after the video. In beta 4, it's significantly choppier.

Sound like some issue, as it should work no problem on your machine.

Ah that's something - I didn't get much opportunity to see how b3 behaved, so hopefully this is an issue isolated to R14b4. Thanks for replying.

As a bit of extra information - and presuming the playback fps at the top of the edit windows is accurate - i'm seeing that figure jump as high as 70fps when attempting to playback my 60fps footage?
I'd had imagine it would dip during laggy playback, but this suggest it's also playing the footage too fast?

Thanks.

I'm also experiencing choppy and unreliable playback issues with the beta, not specifically beta 4, but the previous betas as well.
Without any grades at all, sometimes footage would play smooth (it's only 25 fps) one time, and choppy when played a second time. I'm just placing clips on a timeline, nothing further.
Creating optimized footage sometimes did the same, play smooth one time, choppy when played again.
The FPS indicator is also not very accurate, it would sometimes be lit green and report 25FPS, but on screen the footage still stuttered.

I assume the beta still has some loose ends and that the code has not yet been optimized for release.

I have now removed the beta, and gone back to 12.5.6 which is definatly more stable.

I'm coming from FCPX, and was hoping to make the jump to Resolve (as I like the features it offers), but I have to say that I might rethink my plans as editing in FCPX is like cutting butter. No hiccups or stutters at all.
I'll wait and see how the release version 14 behaves before deciding.

Same here with 4k DNxHD editing in beta 3. Starting to wonder about BM's claim of new 10X faster playback engine in 14. Beta 4 feedback still looks buggy so I'll try 12.5.6. Thanks

You are on a Mac I presume since you use FCPX. Could you please provide some more detail about what is the clip format and resolution and frame rate? Also, please post details about your Mac? Do you have a Decklink card?

I'm kind of in a similar position - and your perf issues sound almost identical to mine - with the price change I was looking at getting Resolve Studio.

If the beta builds have been same perf as 12.5 i'd have no worries, but things aren't as smooth as I'd hoped. Fingers crossed this all gets remedied :)

Indeed, I am a Mac user.
My system is a 5.1 12 core Mac Pro (2x 3,46GHz), 32Gb Ram, 1080ti Nvidia (latest web & cuda drivers), PCIe SSD startup disk, internal Raid 0 for playback & cache location, 12GB ram for Davinci (in preferences), macOS 10.12.5

I do not have a Decklink, I just look at the viewer and full screen viewers.

Resolution is 4K UHD 25FPS AVCHD files (drone footage & fuji xt2), but creating optimized ProResLT files makes no real difference. Sometimes it plays nice, sometimes not.
The lowest timeline resolution I tried is 1080P.
I've gone through all the proposed workflows for better performance, half-res optimized media, performance mode on, smart render cache... I also tried proxy mode, but the resolution becomes so low that it's unbearable to watch.

Going back to 12.5.6, it's no speed demon either, but the performance seems much more consistent than beta 14. I assume this is normal, since 14 is still a beta.

I haven't reported this in the bug thread because I have not tested this extensively and searched for a repeatable pattern that resulted in the sluggish behaviour.
I don't think the above info is helpfull in any way, but I hope it is...

BTW I'm using the Studio Version.

Fwiw - another thing I noticed is that the RAM and drive usage seems much lower than R12.5?

The lower memory usage is good on the face of it (I'd guess a new rendering engine could lead to such reductions) - but it's the lower drive use I'm surprised at.

My footage is on a couple of fast HDDs in RAID0 - when attempting to playback in the edit window (I'd guess it drops to 0.5 to 1fps at times) the drive usage never goes past 60%.
I can recall routinely seeing 100% drive activation when using R12.5.

Hi,

Having the same problem here. RAW BMPCC foootage which ran smoothly in 12.5 is stuttering in 14b4, same computer, same 3D LUT. This is mainly in the Edit page, the others seem to be slightly better at times. What am I missing?

Early 2013 15" MacBook Pro 2.6 GHz Intel Core i7, 16Gig Ram, NVIDIA Graphics.

Okay,

So I think I may have fixed this. I decided to set up Resolve to manually choose the NVIDIA card and CUDA drivers at start up, instead of leaving the selection on Auto which is what I have always done. The result.........full frame rate restored.

Is this an issue with Mac OS 10.12.5, or with Resolve?????

Hi everybody,
Same here on both computers. No way of getting decent play. I made just a simple timeline with cuts only and it starts good with 25 rate, about 50" frame rate starts to drop and at 2' it is around 6-7 frames.
The interesting thing is that I had a smooth playback (HD and HDV) many years ago on 4core Xeon with only 2GB RAM with Newtek Speed edit.
Is there any chance of getting an acceptable timeline playback?
Thank you.

Even though I am grateful for such a fine piece of free software I must say I am very disappointed. Not much for your fault, you are doing as much as you can, but it's been years that I am looking for an NLE on Linux. During the last months I was hoping so much, having seen so many great instruments on Resolve, but now I realize that the time has not come yet. The timeline speed is simply useless, there is no support for mp4, neither in input nor in output.
I have to go back to Lightworks.
Thank you anyway, I will keep on trying the next versions.

Nikola, with my pc, see specs below, I have no problem running, editing and grading MP4 1080 50p. It always runs at 50fps in the preview and timeline windows. Only renders run slower at around 30fps. Your GPU is better than mine so maybe there is a problem elsewhere.

Charles, Nikola wants to use Linux.
Now that the cat #19 is out of the bag, test it as much as you can and use the subforum.
