3440 x 1440 resolution on Blackmagic 4K video assist

PostMon Jul 17, 2017 1:37 pm

Hi,

I use the Blackmagic 4K video assist for screen capture of HDMI sources. I am using an LG curved wide screen monitor and unfortunately, the resolution of 3440x1440 is one that is not supported by the Blackmagic 4K video assist.

It's a bit of a pain as my monitor, then ends up scaling the source res down to 1080p which, on a large screen like this, looks pretty awful. These types of monitors are becoming more and more prevalent so would like to request that this resolution or, a subset of this resolution is added to the 4K.

Please let me know your thoughts.

Video Assist is a camera monitor and recorder. Unless BMD sells cameras that record in that format, I doubt it will happen.

I also don't agree that 21:9 is becoming more popular - it would probably happen in gaming first, and according to the Steam hardware survey from June 2017, 0.26% of users have 3440x1440 as their primary resolution.

The primary market is as a camera monitor and recorder, after all the main picture on the product page is just that.

I use it differently, as a hdmi screen capture (in which it works exceptionally well).

The VA already has support for the standard 4K resolutions and switching to a display that correlates to this would solve the problem that I mentioned. If I can avoid that it would be good, hence my request for 3440x1440 ... to be frank, I know this is a long shot ;) I'll probably end up switching monitors but if it can be done easily in the firmware as a product update, then why not.

I think there is potentially a market for these products outside of camera monitors/recorders and yep, that market in this respect would most likely be gaming. The Elgato products are popular in this space but in comparison, apart from the cost factor, I think BMD has the edge.
