Resolve 14b5 corrupts grading saves

PostMon Jul 17, 2017 4:30 pm

On Ubuntu, Resolve tends to lose any and all grading done in the program, while in some cases, it goes to extremes, like changing curves, altering color bars and resulting usually to either a gray-scale color output or pure black.

It would seem that all saves are corrupt when it comes to coloring. Everything else seems to be working fine, including the decklink. In addition, Resolve still remains in memory after quit.

CentOS does not have the grading issues, but it does remain every now and then in memory. However, I did experience big performance drops on CentOS' stock kernel, as it has no real support for newer/new-ish hardware. And AMD GPUs are very sluggish there.

In any case, all the above have been reported before and appear on ALL betas (grading saves & stuck-on-memory).

The reason I chose to do my final tests on Ubuntu Studio is clearly both the massive performance increase in comparison to CentOS (SSD reads a sustained 423MB/sec on Ubuntu as opposed to ~209MB/sec on CentOS) and the better Desktop Video stability/options on the Debian packages. Plus, AMD does offer a bit better support on their GPUs than CentOS.

System:
Ubuntu Studio 16.04 (Kernel 4.8 Low Latency) - Core i7 970 / 6 core @ 3.2GHz / 24GB DDR3 RAM / RX480 8GB / 3xSSD system / Decklink Mini Monitor

Workaround -

Grading issue fixed with the following steps (includes cross-platform project transfer):
  • Export the project with LUTS from the initial platform
  • On the new system, ignore the initial database and create a new one, preferably on a drive that has sufficient read/write privileges
  • Import the DRP file there and all the LUTS/gradings import correctly

It would seem the initial disk database Resolve builds has permission issues, hence the settings do not transfer or save correctly.

However, resolve still remains in memory after quit.

Further Update

Changing database also fixed the issues on the Color Correct Tab.
The 10-bit color on the project settings no longer brings a black screen & settings -in general- are stabilized.
