Wow, a post production software review by someone who's actually used the product and its competitors' offerings extensively, isn't spewing "common knowledge" of dubious value/accuracy and even admits what he's overlooked.

Before I pass out, I just want to say "Effing excellent review!"

Indeed very interesting and in depth.

Also quite interesting that what is biggest in marketing, the VR tools take the smallest space in the review. And I agree, there are some less shiny but more important improvements in Fusion 9.

Great review!

Thanks for posting -- it was a very informative overview of some of the new stuff in the software, including some pitfalls with default settings that would have tripped some of us Fusion newbies (like me) up :)

My personal opinion: VR will go the way of stereo 3D. A temporary fad.

But Fusion is here to stay.
No, an iGPU is not enough, and you can't use HEVC 10 bit 4:2:2 in the free version.

I think VR will last longer than that, but mostly for things like games and live events.

Which will still need advertising production.

My theory, BMD is going to release a VR camera next year. They currently have a top camera SKU of what, $6,000? a VR camera could sell for $40,000. It's hard to ignore the ability to move a high end piece of hardware like that, especially when you can bundle a Fusion dongle inside and have a full pipeline in a box. Also moves more 12G hardware for recording, routing, etc..

BMD could use the Yi approach, which is to gang several cameras together to make a module VR rig. Yi's approach uses 17 $300 cameras and sells for $17K, and it produces a stereographic 8K image with a depth map via a cloud-based stitching engine. Pretty sweet setup, though it shows how far the headsets have to go before they can provide a high quality image at 2cm from one's eyeball.

Will it happen? It probably depends on how much demand BMD sees in it. I wouldn't be at all surprised if the VR features in Fusion 9 were there to both test the waters and also just the first set of VR related features in the development queue. BMD doesn't seem to like sitting still for long when it comes to development and R&D.

YI makes action cams, though, while BMD doesn't. I think they'd be more likely to make a camera that had SDI connections, recorded DNG, etc.. The difference between a $17K camera and a $80K camera is features that professionals expect and BMD can confidently deliver.

You missed the point. What I was getting at is that BMD has the technology and manufacturing capability already, so it's just a matter of whether or not BMD finds enough return on investment in the analysis.

I don't think that BMD would have much luck selling an $80K camera right now, and even if it could, that doesn't seem like BMD's style; it's a lot more likely based on BMD's history that it would strive to make the most affordable camera that it can and scaling up from there.
