Edit timeline viewer | Black bars

PostFri Aug 11, 2017 8:12 pm

Hello,

i've noticed than when working in 1998x1080 DCI Flat 1.85, there is blacks bars on each side of the image, a few lines of pixels (you really need to zoom). Seems the viewer is actually showing larger than it should be.
-It's impossible to zoom or move the image to fill that gab, it's always there.
-If i use the Crop tool, it will take a few pixel before it actually crop (in my case 24).
The Crop is instantaneous on the Top and Bottom.
-If you switched to either Color or Deliver tab, it's not there.
-If you Cache clips, the render will fill the gabs (?)
-If you switched to HD, 2048x858 Scope or 3996x2160 DCI Flat is't not there also (haven't tried all resolutions).

Specs:
Resolve 14.0.0B.051

Anyone can confirm this problem or it is really only on my side?

I've tried with different sources clips resolutions also (5k, 4k and HD) and it always
showing.

I don't know if this helps, but if I have a 1920 X 1080 clip and set the timeline resolution to DCI Flat 1.85, I see black pillar bars in all viewers.

If I set the zoom to 1.05, then I do not see the pillar bars in the Timeline Viewer on the Edit Page or the viewer on the Color Page.

Thanks for the reply Peter.

It is really not a question of ratio transformation here, familiar with all of those.
I think it is the Edit viewer that as more horizontal pixels that it should;
project resolution is 1998x1080 and it feels like the viewer is 2022x1080 (something
like that).

Here is a clearer pics of the problem:
The image use as the same resolution of the timeline 1998x1080

I think it might be because you can actually resize the viewers on the Edit Page by dragging the horizontal split between the viewer transport controls and the timeline toolbar. While on the Color Page, you can't change the viewer's size.

So in your case, the viewers on the Edit Page may actually be a different size than the viewer on the Color Page. What I would expect is that their aspect ratios would all match.

Maybe that's the answer and helps?

Thanks Peter,

i realize that it might be difficult to see what i'm taking about in those pics. I know
you can resize the viewer which will give you more or less of the grey UI, it's is the
display source image that is actually larger.

Here is a wonderful gif animation that will hopefully explain better what talking about:

Sylvain,

I honestly don't know what to say. Maybe check the Image Scaling section of Project Settings to see if you have some kind of a mismatch.

I can see no extra pixels or black bars in the Edit vs Color viewers. Here's a test I did with a 1920 X 1080 elliptical test pattern. If there were any difference in viewer dimensions, I believe it would show where the ellipse's edge meets the viewer's edge.

And I tried the same using a 1998 X 1080 test image in a DCI Flat 1.85 timeline and got the exact same results.

Below is a copy of the 1998 test pattern that I used.

Thanks Peter for testing all this, appreciated.

I've done more test using your elliptical chart.
Seems to me that the problem is coming from the Output Scaling Preset.
Again, project is 1998x1080 and image source also 1998x1080.
Match timeline Settings option selected.
If, in the Mismatched resolution files
-Center crop wit no resizing
-Scale full frame with crop
-Scale entire image to fit

is selected, i will see crop on the edge of the image.
When Stretch frame to all corners is selected, crop disappear.

Assumption is that maybe there is a crop apply when it shouldn't?

A zoom on the elliptical chart (i've augmented the brightness of the pic):
