UltraStudio Mini Recorder, cannot get it to pick up my Cam

PostTue Sep 05, 2017 4:24 pm

Hello, I'm very new to this stuff but I recently picked up the Mini Recorder to replace my Elgato Game Capture (it won't work with OBS and I want to be using OBS).

I've been able to get my Cannon Rebel T5 to display through Elgato, cannot get it to display on the Mini Recorder. I've been able to get my Vixia HF M301 to display with the Elgato capture but not the Mini Recorder.

I've went through every setting I can find, tinkered with the FPS, etc etc and cannot seem to get anything other than a black screen.

I've been tinkering with live stream painting (creative stuff) and really want to polish my streams. This card sounded like it would be perfect because it was usable through OBS however if I cannot figure out how to get my Cameras to display I'm going to have to return the thing :-/

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

It could very well be that the output from those cameras does not fit within the parameters of the supported formats for the UltraStudio Mini Recorder. To see the settings the Mini Recorder supports, look here.

I've also got a DSLR which should be fully capable of functioning with the Mini Recorder, it's rather new, and none of the settings get me past the black screen with that either.

Connect the Mini Recorder to the computer and open Desktop Video utility application. If the device is detected there, proceed to open up Media Express and check the devices menu to see it's also recognized there and then click the Log & Capture tab. With the source connected and the formats being within those supported by the Mini Recorder, you should see the image. If none of this is working, you may want to check to see if the light (coming from the pinhole on the Mini Recorder) is on and if not, try swapping the Thunderbolt cable. Also be sure to have a Thunderbolt cable/connection and not a Mini DisplayPort cable, as this will not work with the unit.

Device shows up in both programs, Thunderbolt Cable is lighting up the white light in the pin hole on the side of the device, neither of my cameras do anything beyond the black screen. I've adjusted the FPS up and down and resolution on both the DSLR and the Camcorder and nothing works. I'm at a loss for what else to do.

Both cameras output 1080P50!! The ultrastudio mini recorder can't do 1080P50!!

Take a laptop set the output to 1280x720P50 / 60 Connect it to the UMR and see if you get an image then ;)

Didn't the software have that as an option in the drop down? And my cameras both show 60, 30, and 24 as options (not 50). Did I miss something?

My camcorder says it's output is: 1920x1080i. The only setting I can change on that is the FPS. I have i60, 30, or 24.

Internal settings don't always reflect the output of the camera. Connect it to a TV and play with the settings and then hit the info button on the remote of the TV to see what it says.

I hooked it up to the TV and that's what it said. I'll try that again and see what happens but I'm at a serious loss here :-/

So, it should work, signal specifications from BM are:
HD Video Standards
720p50, 720p59.94, 720p60
1080p23.98, 1080p24, 1080p25, 1080p29.97, 1080p30
1080PsF23.98, 1080PsF24, 1080PsF25, 1080PsF29.97, 1080PsF30
1080i50, 1080i59.94, 1080i60

Try a new HDMI cable, also the cable should be less than 10-feet. BM gear is picky about cables, which might seem OK, but?
Cheers

This one is definitely not 19-feet long but it has a micro hdmi converter bit on it (standard HDMI cable). When I run a different HD capture card (Elgato) it picked up both cameras fine which leads me to believe the cable and converter are functioning properly. Would the length of the cable actually cause that much of an issue with the BM Mini Recorder? I can certainly pick one up and try the cable out but I want to be sure that is the case before I go buy a cable and have to promptly return it because that didn't fix the issue.

If this is a common concern then I'll go grab one and see if it helps.

Cables do tend to be an issue more often than not and we suggest them being under 10 ft long. The other device you have may be a bit more tolerant of signals as it appears to be more marketed towards streaming services rather than a capture device like our products. I'm not familiar enough with it to provide details.

Thanks Tony, I had intended to type "10-feet" but hit a "9" instead of a "0". Corrected my post.
Cheers
